Chapter 17 - The Gavel Falls

By dawn, the news had sent shockwaves across the state. Federal agents, backed by the FBI and State Police, executed a simultaneous dawn raid on Judge Marcus Thornton's sprawling private estate in the Oakridge foothills.

Thornton was arrested in his study, sitting before a fireplace where he had desperately been trying to incinerate incriminating tax evasion records.

At noon, Mayor Helen Whitaker and the Federal Prosecutor held a joint press conference on the steps of the County Courthouse, with Mason Reed and Captain Daniel Brooks standing by their side.

"For fourteen years, the citizens of Oakridge were subjected to corruption at the highest levels of our judiciary," Mayor Whitaker announced to a sea of journalists. "Today, thanks to the undeniable bravery of Mason Reed, Captain Daniel Brooks, and the unyielding legacy of Paramedic Elliot Reed, every co-conspirator has been brought to justice."

Judge Thornton's corrupt rulings were formally overturned, and the sealed records of Elliot Reed's heroic service were officially unsealed and permanently entered into the State Hall of Heroes.

As the cameras flashed, a reporter shouted: "Mason! How does an eighteen-year-old barista take down a multi-million-dollar criminal network?"

Mason stepped to the podium, adjusting the microphone with quiet poise.

"I didn't take down anything," Mason answered calmly. "My father planted seeds of integrity fourteen years ago when he chose to save a stranger's life. All I did was water those seeds with a little kindness and refuse to back down when things got tough. Anyone in this town would have done the same."

The crowd of reporters fell silent, moved by his humility, before bursting into enthusiastic applause.

Across the street, Thomas Drake stood among the spectators with tears streaming down his face. A state marshal placed a hand on his shoulder, informing him that his cooperation had earned him full immunity and enrollment in witness protection. Thomas gave Mason a subtle, grateful nod before turning to begin his new life in peace.
