Chapter 12 - Secrets of the Father

The discovery inside the secret compartment left Liam standing in his father's dark study, paralyzed by betrayal and confusion.
He stared down at the black leather journal resting on the mahogany desk. Pages of meticulous notes, global banking codes, and blueprints for covert influence operations were documented in Marcus Carter’s unmistakable handwriting dating back to twenty-five years ago.
"Liam?"
Marcus’s voice echoed from the hallway. Marcus walked into the study, wearing his dark tuxedo, adjusting his cuff links. "The car is waiting downstairs, son. Your mother is—"
Marcus stopped mid-sentence. His eyes fell upon the open drawer, the displaced velvet lining, and the black leather journal resting open on the desk.
The color slowly drained from Marcus’s face. The confident, invincible father figure Liam had looked up to suddenly looked old, vulnerable, and exposed.
"Liam..." Marcus said softly, his voice barely a whisper. "Where did you find that?"
"Who called me, Dad?" Liam asked, his voice shaking with anger and heartbreak. "Someone called my private line ten minutes ago. They told me to look in this drawer. They said you weren't just a victim of the Obsidian Group... they said you were one of the original founders of the shadow network!"
Marcus took a slow, heavy breath, closing his eyes for a moment. He walked over to the leather chair behind his desk and sat down heavily, looking up at his son with profound regret.
"Sit down, Liam," Marcus said quietly. "It's time you learned the whole truth."
"I don't want excuses, Dad!" Liam shouted, tears of frustration stinging his eyes. "You told me we were fighting corrupt monsters! You told me Vance was a villain who attacked our family out of nowhere! Were you one of them?!"
"Twenty-five years ago, yes," Marcus confessed, his voice heavy with solemn honesty. "When I was thirty years old, I was arrogant, ambitious, and obsessed with building a global network that could shape history. Me, Ronald Vance, and three other international figures created *The Apex Consortium*."
Liam stared at his father in disbelief. "Why?"
"We believed we could control global stability," Marcus explained, looking down at his scarred hands. "We thought if a small group of visionary leaders controlled global energy, finance, and defense, we could prevent wars and financial collapses. It was arrogant, dangerous hubris."
Marcus looked up into Liam's eyes. "But ten years ago, I realized what we had actually created. It wasn't a force for order; it was a monster driven by pure greed. Vance and the others didn't want stability; they wanted total, totalitarian domination. They wanted to weaponize Project Aegis to control entire nations."
"So what did you do?" Liam asked quietly.
"I tried to dismantle it from the inside," Marcus revealed. "I spent five years secretly siphoning their assets, destroying their infrastructure, and building a vault of evidence to destroy them. That’s why Vance put that bomb on my helicopter five years ago, Liam! It wasn't just a corporate takeover... it was an execution ordered by the Consortium to stop me from exposing them!"
Liam listened, his chest heaving as the pieces of the grand puzzle finally fit together. The war hadn't started five years ago—it had been raging for a quarter of a century.
"Who was the caller, Dad?" Liam asked, leaning across the desk. "He said Vance was just a manager. Who is the real head of the Apex Consortium?"
Marcus leaned forward, his face turning solemn and deadly serious.
"His name is Director Nicholas Sterling," Marcus said softly.
Liam’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. "Sterling...? As in... Sarah Sterling? Our legal attorney who helped us defeat Victor Grant?!"
"Sarah's father," Marcus confirmed grimly. "Nicholas Sterling is a former director of global intelligence and the true shadow head of the Apex Consortium. Sarah wasn't just helping us in court, Liam... she was monitoring every move we made to ensure we only destroyed Vance, leaving her father's position untouched."
Suddenly, the heavy Oak doors of the study creaked open.
Sarah Sterling stood in the doorway, wearing an elegant dark velvet evening gown. But in her hand, pointed directly at Marcus’s chest, was a sleek, silenced 9mm handgun.

"Very impressive deduction, Marcus," Sarah said smoothly, a cold, calculating smile breaking across her face. "My father sends his regards."
