Chapter 19 - The Last Confession

The high-security medical wing of ADX Florence was a stark, sterile world of reinforced concrete, bulletproof glass, and buzzing fluorescent lights.

Marcus and Liam Carter walked down the long, silent corridor, escorted by two heavily armed federal guards. The heavy steel doors slid open with loud mechanical thuds at every security checkpoint.

They reached Room 104.

Behind a thick pane of shatterproof glass sat Victor Grant.

The once immaculate, arrogant corporate tycoon was now completely unrecognizable. He was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his face gaunt and pale, hooked up to heart monitors and IV drips. His hair was thin and white, and his breathing was shallow and labored.

The guard unlocked the visitor booth, allowing Marcus and Liam to step inside. They sat on two metal stools on their side of the glass partition. Marcus picked up the heavy plastic intercom phone, while Liam put his hand near the speaker grid.

Victor slowly raised his head, his sunken eyes fixing onto Marcus, then shifting to Liam. A weak, bitter smile touched his dry lips.

"You actually came," Victor said, his voice raspy, echoing through the intercom. "I didn't think you'd bother coming to see a dead man."

"The warden said you had something to tell us, Victor," Marcus said, keeping his voice neutral and professional. "We're listening."

Victor coughed weakly, his chest heaving under the weight of his failing body. "I don't have much time, Marcus. The poison... it was introduced into my drinking water during my initial holding cell stay in New York. The Consortium leaves no loose threads."

"We know about Nicholas Sterling and the Apex Consortium, Victor," Liam spoke up through the intercom. "The entire network was dismantled three months ago in Geneva. Sterling and his daughter are facing life sentences."

Victor let out a dry, wheezing laugh. "Sterling... Sarah... you think they were the top of the pyramid?"

Liam brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"

Victor leaned his head closer to the glass, his eyes burning with a strange, frantic intensity. "Nicholas Sterling was old, Liam. He was a caretaker. The true founder of the Apex Protocol... the man who designed the original financial master key twenty-five years ago... was never Nicholas."

Marcus felt a cold knot form in his stomach. "Victor... what are you talking about?"

"When you tried to leave the Consortium ten years ago, Marcus," Victor whispered, his bloodshot eyes staring into Marcus’s soul, "you thought you hid the master seed code in the Apex Quantum Drive. But you didn't create the seed code alone."

"My father created it with Nicholas Vance and one other partner," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low register. "The fourth founder died twenty years ago in a car accident in Tokyo."

Victor smiled—a terrifying, hollow smile. "He didn't die, Marcus. He faked his death... just like you did five years ago."

Marcus froze. His breath caught in his throat.

"His name was Arthur Vance," Victor revealed, his breathing growing dangerously shallow as the heart monitor beside him began beep rapidly. "Ronald Vance's elder brother. The true mastermind behind the entire global network. He has been operating from the shadows of East Asia for two decades."

Liam looked at his father, seeing Marcus’s face drain completely of color—a sight Liam had never seen before.

"Arthur... is alive?" Marcus whispered, stunned beyond words.

"He let you destroy Ronald and Nicholas," Victor gasped, struggling for air as his vitals plummeted on the monitor screen. "He wanted them gone... so he could consolidate... total control of the new digital economy... He knows about your son, Marcus... He knows Liam cracked the drive..."

The heart monitor issued a continuous, high-pitched flatline tone:

*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.*

Medical team alarms began ringing through the corridor. Doctors and guards rushed into Victor's room, surrounding his bed with crash carts and defibrillator pads.

Through the glass, Marcus and Liam watched as Victor Grant's eyes slowly went glassy and blank, his breath ceasing completely.

Liam turned to his father, his heart pounding in his chest. "Dad... who is Arthur Vance?"

Marcus slowly set down the intercom phone, his hands steadying as a cold, terrifying resolve replaced his shock.

"He was the smartest man I ever met," Marcus said softly, staring through the glass at the dead tycoon. "And the most dangerous."

Marcus turned to Liam, looking into his son's eyes. "He thinks he can use the shadows to target my family again. But he doesn't know who we are now."

"We aren't running anymore, Dad," Liam said, his voice steady, mature, and filled with unbreakable courage. "If he comes for us... we finish him together."

Marcus placed his hand firmly on Liam's shoulder, a strong, proud smile breaking across his scarred face. "That's my boy."
