Chapter 13 - The Apex Protocol

The silence in the study was deadly. Sarah Sterling stood in the doorway, her suppressed weapon trained steadily on Marcus Carter’s chest. Her eyes, which had once radiated legal brilliance and professional loyalty, were now as cold and unfeeling as polished marble.
"Sarah," Marcus said, keeping his hands flat on his desk, his voice calm and measured. "I should have known. Your father would never leave a pawn like Victor Grant in control without keeping an overseer nearby."
Sarah chuckled softly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her with her foot. "Victor was an incompetent fool, Marcus. And Vance was an arrogant dinosaur who thought money was the ultimate power. My father used you and Liam to clean house. You destroyed Vance, eliminated our internal rivals, and handed us total control of Carter Global on a silver platter."
Liam stepped subtly sideways, positioning his body between Sarah's line of fire and the emergency silent alarm button beneath the corner of the oak desk.
"Don't move, Liam," Sarah warned, snapping the gun barrel toward him instantly. "I’ve trained with elite tactical operators since I was sixteen. I will put a round through your knee before your finger moves two inches."
"What does your father want, Sarah?" Liam asked, holding her gaze with fierce intensity. "You have the company, you have Vance’s assets. Why come here tonight?"
"Because your father still holds the master cryptographic key to the *Apex Protocol*," Sarah revealed, her eyes narrowing. "When Marcus faked his death five years ago, he encrypted the Consortium's core global wealth reserves into a cold-storage quantum drive. Fifty billion dollars in untraceable assets. My father wants that drive."
"He'll never get it," Marcus said flatly. "That money was built on blood and global exploitation. I'd rather destroy the drive than hand it to Nicholas Sterling."
Sarah’s smile vanished. "You don't have a choice, Marcus. Look out your window."
Liam glanced out the large bay window behind the desk. Down on the driveway, two black tactical vans had pulled up quietly. Four heavily armed men in unmarked military gear were stepping out, escorting Eleanor Carter out of her sedan, her hands zip-tied behind her back!
"Mom!" Liam gasped, his blood running cold.
"Your wife is currently secured in the rear vehicle, Marcus," Sarah said coldly. "You have sixty seconds to hand over the quantum drive, or my team executes her right there on your front lawn."
Marcus’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. The cool, calculating tactical master vanished, replaced by a father and husband pushed to the absolute brink of fury.
"The drive is in the wall safe behind the portrait of my father," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark whisper.
"Get it," Sarah ordered, gesturing with her gun. "Slowly."
Marcus stood up slowly, stepping toward the large oil painting hanging on the side wall. He swung the frame open, revealing a digital biometric safe. He entered an eight-digit code and pressed his thumb against the scanner.
*CLICK.*
The heavy steel door swung open. Inside lay a metallic silver cylinder, glowing with a soft blue LED pulse—the Apex Quantum Drive.
Marcus reached inside, pulling out the cylinder. But as he turned around, his fingers quietly pressed a hidden recessed button on the bottom of the metallic casing.
"Here it is," Marcus said, holding the cylinder out.
Sarah’s eyes gleamed with greed. "Hand it over, kid," she commanded Liam. "Bring it to me."
Liam stepped forward, taking the glowing cylinder from his father's hand. As Liam’s fingers brushed against his father's, Marcus whispered two words so faintly only Liam could hear:
*"Protocol Omega."*
Liam’s eyes widened slightly in realization. Protocol Omega was the emergency overload procedure Marcus had designed for all Carter experimental hardware.
Liam walked slowly toward Sarah, holding out the drive. Sarah reached out her hand to grab it.
The second her fingers touched the silver casing, Liam didn't let go—he squeezed the casing violently, crushing the secondary contact ring!
*FLASH!*
A intense electrical shock pulse blasted out from the cylinder, surging straight into Sarah’s arm!
"AAARGH!" Sarah screamed in agony as fifty thousand volts of localized electrical charge paralyzed her nervous system. Her hand convulsed, dropping the silenced gun onto the carpet!
Before she could recover, Marcus moved like lightning. He stepped forward, delivering a brutal palm strike to Sarah’s sternum, knocking the breath from her lungs, and swept her legs, pinning her face-down onto the floor!
Liam scooped up the dropped gun, racking the slide, aiming it directly at the back of Sarah’s head.

"Call off your men downstairs, Sarah," Liam commanded, his voice cold as steel. "Or you won't survive the next five seconds."
