Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Monaco

The fallout from Victor Grant’s arrest hit Wall Street like an earthquake. Within twelve hours, news of Marcus Carter’s miraculous survival flooded national news networks, social media platforms, and financial journals. Carter Global Enterprise stock skyrocketed by forty percent in a single trading session as investors celebrated the return of the visionary founder.
Yet, inside the heavily fortified penthouse of the Carter Estate in Manhattan, there were no celebrations.
Marcus sat behind a desk cluttered with encrypted laptops, satellite phones, and old intelligence dockets. The room was dim, illuminated only by the glow of multiple monitors displaying international banking networks and satellite surveillance feeds.
Liam walked in, carrying two mugs of black coffee. He set one down on his father's desk and looked at the primary screen, which showed a high-resolution photograph of an elderly man with silver hair, sitting on a luxury yacht in the harbor of Monaco.
"Who is he?" Liam asked, pulling up a chair.
Marcus picked up his coffee, taking a slow sip before pointing at the screen. "That is Baron Ronald Vance. On paper, he’s a philanthropist and retired European venture capitalist. In reality, he is the founder of 'The Obsidian Group'—a global syndicate of corrupt elites, weapons contractors, and rogue intelligence officers."
Liam frowned. "And Victor Grant worked for him?"
"Victor was Vance's lapdog," Marcus explained, zooming in on the photograph. "Five years ago, when Carter Enterprise was developing 'Project Aegis'—our satellite-based clean energy distribution network—Vance realized it would render his global oil and defense monopolies obsolete. He couldn't buy me off, so he ordered Victor to sabotage my helicopter and liquidate the company."
"If Vance is in Monaco, why haven't the authorities arrested him?" Liam asked, his voice filled with frustration. "He tried to kill you!"
"Because men like Ronald Vance exist above the law," Marcus said grimly. "He owns judges, prime ministers, and enforcement agencies across three continents. You can't defeat him with a courtroom, Liam. You have to cut off his head financially and expose his network to the light."
Suddenly, Marcus’s private satellite phone vibrated on the desk. The caller ID showed a caller from an untraceable, encrypted satellite relay.
Marcus clicked speakerphone. "Speak."
A smooth, refined voice with a heavy British accent came through the speakers. "Hello, Marcus. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised to hear you survived the deep swim off the coast of Maine five years ago. You always were remarkably resilient."
Liam felt a chill run down his spine. It was Baron Vance.
"Vance," Marcus said, his voice dropping into an icy register. "I see Victor managed to deliver my message before he was dragged off to a federal cell."
A dry, aristocratic laugh echoed through the speaker. "Poor Victor. A useful accountant, but utterly lacking in vision. He panicked the moment you showed your face. But surely you didn't think sweeping up my front man would intimidate me, Marcus?"
"I don't intend to intimidate you, Ronald," Marcus replied calmly. "I intend to destroy you."
"A noble ambition," Vance said softly. "But you've been out of the game for five years, my friend. The world has changed. While you were hiding in dark rooms recovering from your burn injuries, I expanded my reach. Your precious Project Aegis? The blue prints are already in my possession. My engineers are completing the final phase of activation in three days."
Liam looked at his father in shock. "What? That's impossible! The schematics were encrypted in the main vault!"
"Ah, the young Carter boy," Vance sneered over the phone line. "You inherit your father's fire, boy, but not his caution. Did you really think Victor was the only mole in your father's inner circle? Check your secure server logs, Marcus. Page 404."
Marcus rapidly typed on his keyboard, pulling up the internal security access logs for Carter Enterprise’s main mainframe. His face grew completely pale.
"No..." Marcus whispered.
The access log showed that forty-eight hours ago, an administrative security bypass had been executed from inside the Carter Estate using a top-level security key—a key held only by three people in the world: Marcus, Liam, and...
"Evelyn," Liam gasped, his eyes wide with betrayal. "Evelyn Vance... she’s Baron Vance’s daughter?"
"Evelyn is my niece, actually," Vance corrected smoothly over the line. "She's been sitting at your financial table for ten years, feeding me every single line of code, every contract, and every security protocol. While you were making a grand scene arresting Victor yesterday morning, Evelyn walked out of your headquarters with the master encryption key to Project Aegis."
Marcus slammed his fist onto the desk, rattling the coffee mugs. "If you deploy Aegis for military weaponization, Vance, millions of innocent people will die!"
"Then I suggest you come and stop me," Vance replied cheerfully. "I am hosting a private charity auction aboard my yacht, *The Leviathan*, in Monaco this Saturday night. If you wish to retrieve your key and save your legacy, Marcus, you are cordially invited. But come alone... or I will ensure your son doesn't live to see his next birthday."
The call disconnected with a sharp tone.
Silence fell over the room once more. Liam looked at his father, seeing the intense anger and pain burning behind Marcus’s eyes.
"Dad," Liam said, his voice resolute. "We're going to Monaco."
Marcus looked at his son, shaking his head. "No, Liam. It's a trap. He wants me there so he can finish what he started five years ago."
"He threatened our family, Dad," Liam insisted, standing up tall. "You spent five years coming back from the dead to protect us. I’m not letting you walk into the lion’s den alone. We do this together."
Marcus stared at his son for a long moment, seeing the unbreakable determination of a young man who was no longer just a boy riding a bike. A faint, proud smile crossed Marcus’s scarred face.
May you like
"Alright," Marcus said softly. "Then we prepare for war."
