Chapter 12 - The Wall of Ice

A strange, fragile peace settled over the Reed estate in the weeks following the arrest of Richard Vance, Mrs. Gable, and Sloane Whitaker. Victoria Reed had departed for her estate in Palm Beach, disgraced and stripped of her influence over household affairs. The domestic staff had been entirely replaced with high-clearance, vetted personnel who treated Grace not as a maid, but as the supreme authority of the second floor.
Yet, despite the return of physical safety, an immense emotional chasm remained between Nathaniel and Grace.
Grace fulfilled her duties with flawless dedication. Under her continuous care, Oliver returned to his happy, vibrant self. But toward Nathaniel, Grace built a wall of impenetrable, polite professionalism. She no longer sat with him in the library late at night. She no longer drank wine by the fireplace or shared spontaneous laughs over painting sessions. Whenever Nathaniel entered a room, Grace stood up politely, answered his questions with concise, formal courtesy, and quietly excused herself.
Nathaniel was undergoing his own agonizing transformation. The guilt of doubting her ate away at his soul like acid. He completely restructured his life, stepping down as chief executive officer of Reed Financial Services to assume a non-executive chairman role, permanently handing daily operations to his trusted board. He stopped traveling. He was home every single morning and evening, desperate to show Grace that he was committed to being a present father—and a man worthy of her trust.
One chilly autumn evening, as a crisp breeze rustled the golden leaves across the estate gardens, Nathaniel found Grace sitting on the stone patio outside the glass doors, watching Oliver play with a wooden toy truck in the courtyard.
Nathaniel walked out, carrying two fleece blankets. He gently laid one over Grace’s shoulders.
"It’s getting cold out here, Grace," Nathaniel said softly, sitting down on the stone bench three feet away from her, respecting her space.
Grace adjusted the blanket, her voice perfectly polite. "Thank you, Mr. Reed. I’ll bring Oliver inside in five minutes."
Hearing him called 'Mr. Reed' felt like a cold blade slipping into Nathaniel’s chest.
"Grace... please," Nathaniel pleaded, his dark eyes filled with desperate sorrow. "Don't call me that. You called me Nathaniel for months."
Grace kept her eyes fixed on Oliver in the courtyard. "Things were different then, sir. I mistook professional proximity for personal trust."
Nathaniel flinched, looking down at his tightly intertwined hands. "I deserve that. I deserve every bit of anger and coldness you have for me. I failed you, Grace. When you needed me to stand by you the most, I allowed my past trauma and fear of betrayal to blind me. I looked at planted evidence instead of looking at your heart."
"You looked at a mugshot and a police report, Mr. Reed," Grace said, her voice finally breaking its calm facade, a sharp edge of hurt breaking through. "You knew how much I suffered in Chicago. You knew I spent seven years trying to rebuild my life from my brother’s crimes. And the second someone planted a necklace in my closet, you looked at me like I was a common thief."
"I was a coward!" Nathaniel admitted fiercely, standing up, his voice echoing across the courtyard. "I was terrified! I lost Caroline to a sudden aneurysm, and for fourteen months, my heart was completely dead! Then you walked into this house. You brought light back into my life, you gave my son a mother’s love, and... and I fell in love with you, Grace!"
Grace froze completely. The autumn wind seemed to stop blowing. She slowly stood up, turning her pale face toward him, her eyes wide with shock and pain.
"Don't say that," Grace whispered, shaking her head. "Don't you dare use that word to fix what you broke."
"It’s the absolute truth!" Nathaniel declared, taking a step closer, tears welling in his dark eyes. "I love you, Grace. I fell in love with your kindness, your fierce integrity, your warmth, and the way you hold my son like he is your own flesh and blood. I panicked because the thought of you betraying me was an agony I couldn't survive! But I was wrong! I will spend every remaining day of my life earning your trust back if you give me the chance!"
Grace looked at the powerful billionaire standing before her, weeping openly in the cold wind, laying his heart completely bare. A part of her heart—the part that had secretly loved him for months—wanted to throw herself into his arms. But the lingering trauma of being dragged away in handcuffs while he stood silent was too fresh, too terrifying.

"Love isn't just a feeling, Nathaniel," Grace said softly, a single tear escaping her eye, trailing down her cheek. "Love is trust. And right now... my trust is shattered."
Grace turned away, taking Oliver by his small hand, and walked inside the warm house, leaving Nathaniel standing alone in the cold autumn dusk.
