Chapter 15 - The Summer of Promises

Six months later, the icy trauma of winter had given way to a glorious, sun-drenched summer on Long Island Sound. The sprawling grounds of the Reed estate were vibrant with blooming roses, lush green lawns, and the sparkling blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean crashing gently against the private stone pier.

The estate felt like a completely different world. The quiet, cold atmosphere of grief that had once defined the vast mansion had been permanently erased, replaced by warmth, continuous music, and the bright, energetic laughter of a growing child.

Oliver was almost three years old now. He was a vibrant, talkative, and fiercely confident toddler who spent his days running barefoot across the manicured gardens, chased happily by a rescue golden retriever puppy Nathaniel had adopted for him.

Grace had excelled in her studies at Columbia University, balancing her academic achievements with her total devotion to her family. She no longer wore dark service clothes or professional guardian uniforms; she moved through the mansion in elegant, flowing summer dresses, beloved by the new domestic staff and respected by everyone who crossed her path.

Nathaniel had undergone a complete life restoration. The sharp, hardened lines of grief and stress that had once aged his face were entirely gone. He looked younger, vibrant, and filled with a deep, serene happiness.

One warm July evening, as the sun began its slow descent into the horizon, casting brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold across the water, Nathaniel led Grace down the private stone steps toward the wooden dock.

Oliver was playing safely near the lawn above under the watchful eye of Marion Fields, who had become a beloved honorary aunt to the family.

Grace walked along the wooden pier, the warm sea breeze blowing her hair back, holding Nathaniel’s hand tightly.

"Where are we going, Nathaniel?" Grace asked with a soft, curious laugh. "Dinner isn't for another hour."

Nathaniel stopped at the edge of the pier, where a private wooden gazebo overlooked the endless ocean. The gazebo was beautifully decorated with hundreds of fragrant white orchids and soft, glowing string lights that twinkled in the dusk.

Grace gasped softly, her hand flying to her heart. "Nathaniel... this is gorgeous."

Nathaniel turned to face her, taking both of her hands into his. His dark eyes were burning with an intensity so profound it made Grace’s breath catch in her throat.

"Grace," Nathaniel began, his voice deep, smooth, and trembling slightly with raw emotion. "Two years ago, this house was an empty, silent cage. I was a man drowned in grief, raising a son who didn't know how to smile. I was terrified that I would spend the rest of my life watching Oliver grow up in a world devoid of real love."

He stepped closer, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "Then came a night where three wealthy, elegant women tried to claim a place in this family. But my son didn't choose silk, diamonds, or pedigree. He walked straight across that rug into the arms of the only person in the room who possessed a pure, unconditional heart."

Tears of pure happiness prickled Grace’s eyes as she listened to his words.

"You saved my son, Grace," Nathaniel continued softly. "And then, you saved me. You taught me how to trust again, how to smile again, and how to open my heart to a future I thought was lost forever. I love you more than life itself."

Nathaniel slowly dropped to one knee on the wooden pier. From his jacket pocket, he pulled a velvet ring box, opening it to reveal a stunning, flawless three-carat blue diamond ring, gleaming brilliantly in the twilight.

"Grace Miller," Nathaniel said, looking up into her eyes with total vulnerability. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife? Will you stay with us, love us, and let us love you forever?"

Before Grace could even speak, a tiny pair of footsteps came pattering down the stone steps.

Oliver ran out onto the dock, his yellow puppy tumbling behind him. The boy stopped beside his father, looking up at Grace with big, bright blue eyes, his mouth messy with peach juice from his afternoon snack.

"Grace!" Oliver called out loudly, tugging her dress. "Daddy said you gonna be my real Mommy now! Say yes, Grace! Say yes!"

Grace burst into a joyful, breathless laugh, tears of absolute happiness cascading down her cheeks. She dropped to her knees on the wooden dock, pulling both Nathaniel and Oliver into a fierce, overwhelming embrace.

"Yes!" Grace cried, kissing Nathaniel’s lips passionately before kissing Oliver’s sticky cheeks. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Nathaniel let out a triumphant laugh, sliding the brilliant blue diamond onto her finger, wrapping his powerful arms around his fiancee and his son as the sun set over the ocean, sealing a promise that had been written in the shadows two long years ago.
