Chapter 17 - Shadows of the Mind

Six months after the fairy-tale wedding, the Reed family had settled into an idyllic life of domestic harmony. Grace had officially graduated with top honors from her program at Columbia University, founding a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing early childhood resources for low-income single mothers—a project fully funded by Reed Enterprises.
Nathaniel had completely mastered the balance between his corporate chairman responsibilities and his family life. The family spent their weekends at their mountain cabin in Vermont or taking private boat trips along the coast.
However, the human mind often hides unresolved scars that surface when life is at its quietest.
In early spring, Grace began experiencing sudden, inexplicable bouts of severe anxiety. Whenever Nathaniel left for a brief corporate meeting or when Oliver was out playing on the estate grounds, a cold, irrational fear would grip Grace’s chest. The deep trauma of her unexpected arrest—the terrifying memory of metal handcuffs clicking around her wrists and being dragged away while a child screamed—had left invisible, unhealed wounds in her subconscious.
One evening, Nathaniel walked into their master suite to find Grace sitting on the edge of the balcony in her nightgown, her legs pulled tight to her chest, her breathing rapid and shallow, staring out into the dark Atlantic Ocean.
Nathaniel’s heart instantly tightened. He quickly walked out, kneeling beside her on the cold stone floor, wrapping his arms securely around her.
"Grace... darling, what’s wrong?" Nathaniel asked softly, rubbing her cold arms. "Are you in pain?"
Grace looked at him, her eyes filled with sudden, uncontrollable tears. "Nathaniel... I... I had another nightmare. I dreamt that the police came back. I dreamt that someone planted something in Oliver’s room, and you were standing at the door looking at me like you didn't know me."
Nathaniel felt a sharp pang of intense guilt, but he didn't offer cheap platitudes. He pulled her tight into his chest, holding her head against his neck, letting her hear his steady, powerful heartbeat.
"I’m so sorry, Grace," Nathaniel whispered, his voice dripping with pure tenderness. "I'm so sorry that my initial mistake left this scar on your heart. But look at me."
He gently cupped her face in both hands, forcing her to meet his dark, resolute gaze.
"That night will never happen again," Nathaniel declared fiercely. "You are my wife. You are Mrs. Reed. You are the matriarch of this home. No one can ever touch you, no one can ever accuse you, and no one can ever take you away from us. I am your shield, Grace. Always."
Grace buried her face in his neck, sobbing softly as the terrifying anxiety began to melt away under his physical warmth and absolute reassurance.
"I know," Grace whispered, wrapping her arms tight around his neck. "I know, Nathaniel. I just... I get so scared of losing this happiness. It feels too perfect."
"Happiness isn't something that can be stolen from us anymore, Grace," Nathaniel said softly, pressing a deep, gentle kiss to her forehead. "We fought for this happiness through fire and storm. We earned it."

Nathaniel lifted her easily into his arms, carrying her back inside the warm bedroom, laying her down under the heavy duvet. He climbed in beside her, pulling her close against his chest, stroking her hair until her breathing turned slow, rhythmic, and peaceful.
As he watched his wife fall into a deep, safe sleep, Nathaniel made a silent vow that he would spend the rest of his life being the unwavering rock that protected her heart from every lingering shadow of the past.
