Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

A dense, suffocating fog rolled in off Long Island Sound, wrapping the Reed estate in a thick shroud of gray. It was a Thursday evening, and Nathaniel was forced to stay late at his Manhattan office to manage an unexpected international market emergency.
Inside the mansion, the air felt thick with tension.
Grace spent the evening putting Oliver to sleep, reading him his favorite story about a brave little bear. By nine o'clock, the child was sleeping soundly. Exhausted from her university studies, Grace decided to turn in early. She retired to her second-floor suite, locking the door, and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
At precisely one o'clock in the morning, a quiet figure moved through the pitch-black hallways of the main house.
Mrs. Gable used her master key card to disable the internal motion sensors leading to Nathaniel’s private library—a routine maintenance code she had memorized years ago. Following behind her in dark clothing was Richard Vance.
Using the security combination Mrs. Gable had covertly copied from Nathaniel’s desk desk-blotter weeks earlier, Richard opened the hidden wall safe behind the grand oil painting of the original Reed estate. Inside lay stacks of international currency, high-value bearer bonds, and a velvet box containing Caroline Reed’s priceless diamond necklace—a family heirloom valued at over two million dollars.
Richard’s eyes gleamed with greed. He grabbed the diamond necklace, two stacks of bearer bonds, and several rare gold coins.
"Don't take everything, you idiot!" Mrs. Gable hissed in a violent whisper. "If it looks like an opportunistic robbery, they’ll call the FBI instantly! It needs to look like an internal theft!"
"Relax, old woman," Richard muttered, slipping the diamond necklace into a black leather pouch. "I know how to setup a crime scene."
Moving like a shadow, Richard slipped up the secondary service staircase leading to the second floor. Mrs. Gable unlocked the outer service access panel to Grace’s suite. Richard carefully slid the black leather pouch containing the priceless diamond necklace and several forged financial receipts directly under Grace’s wardrobe, deep in the dark recess behind her winter coats.
By two in the morning, Richard had vanished into the foggy night, fifty thousand dollars richer courtesy of Sloane Whitaker’s advance payment, leaving behind a ticking time bomb that was set to detonate at dawn.
The explosion came at seven-thirty AM.
Grace was awakened by the loud, aggressive sound of heavy knocking on her suite door. She hastily threw on a silk robe and opened the door, finding Nathaniel standing in the hallway, surrounded by three uniform officers from the Nassau County Police Department and a stern-looking chief detective. Standing behind them were Victoria Reed and Mrs. Gable, both holding expressions of solemn triumph.
Grace’s heart stopped. "Nathaniel? What’s going on?"
Nathaniel looked utterly devastated. His face was pale, his eyes shadowed with intense pain and disbelief. "Grace... my late wife’s diamond necklace and two million dollars in bearer bonds were stolen from the library safe last night."
Grace gasped, pulling her robe tight around her chest. "Stolen?! Oh my god! Nathaniel, who would do that?!"
"That’s what we’re here to find out, miss," Chief Detective Miller said stepping forward, pushing past her into the suite. "The estate manager informed us that internal security logs show access to the library safe occurred at 1:15 AM using an administrative security code. Furthermore, a secondary access panel to this suite was unlocked from the inside."
"What?!" Grace stammered, looking at Nathaniel with desperate eyes. "I didn't leave my room! I was asleep all night!"
Victoria Reed stepped into the room, pointing a trembling, dramatic finger at Grace. "Search her room, Detective! I told my son this girl was a fraud! Her family history is built on financial theft!"
"Mother, quiet!" Nathaniel snapped, his voice sharp, though his eyes remained fixed on Grace, filled with agonizing conflict. "Grace... did you leave this room last night?"
"No! I swear on my life, Nathaniel, I never left this room!" Grace cried, tears springing to her eyes. "I don't even know the code to your safe!"
Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her voice filled with fake pity. "Detective... as head housekeeper, it pains me to say this, but I saw Miss Grace near the library around midnight carrying a heavy file folder."
"You lying snake!" Grace yelled, turning on the housekeeper. "I was in bed by nine!"
"Search the room," Detective Miller commanded his officers.
Two officers began systematically pulling open drawers, searching under the mattress, and sifting through the closet. Grace stood frozen, her hands trembling violently, praying that this nightmare would end.
Thirty seconds later, an officer emerged from the closet holding a black leather pouch. He unzipped it, tipping the contents onto the bed.
The morning sunlight caught the brilliant white sparkles of Caroline Reed’s diamond necklace. Beside the necklace were four stacks of bearer bonds and a series of forged purchase invoices bearing Grace’s signed name.
The room fell into an appalling, suffocating silence.
Victoria gasped dramatically. Mrs. Gable smirked triumphantly in the background.
Chief Detective Miller picked up the necklace, then turned to Grace. "Grace Miller, also known as Grace Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, safe burglary, and commercial fraud."
Grace felt the world spin out of control. She looked at the diamond necklace, then at the forged papers, and finally at Nathaniel.
"Nathaniel... please," Grace sobbed, tears streaming down her face as the police officer grabbed her arms, pulling her hands behind her back. "I didn't do this! You have to believe me! I didn't steal anything! Someone framed me!"
Nathaniel stood motionless. He looked at the diamonds that had belonged to his deceased wife, then down at the signed forged invoices bearing Grace’s handwriting. The evidence was staggering, undeniable, and utterly crushing. The wall of trust he had built around his heart seemed to shatter into a million jagged pieces.
"Nathaniel! Look at me!" Grace screamed as the cold metal handcuffs clicked tight around her wrists. "Look at my eyes! I didn't do this!"
Nathaniel slowly raised his head. His eyes were devoid of heat, filled only with a deep, bottomless sorrow. He couldn't speak. The trauma of betrayal—the belief that he had allowed another wolf into his son’s life—paralyzed his vocal cords.
As the police escorted a weeping Grace down the grand staircase, young Oliver ran out of the nursery, screaming for her.

"Grace! Grace!" the boy cried, rushing to the top of the stairs, his little hands gripping the banister. "Grace, don't go!"
Grace looked back one last time, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces as she was dragged out into the rain, leaving the Reed estate in absolute ruin.
