Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The rainy night gave way to an uneasy, fog-shrouded morning. The atmosphere inside the Reed estate felt heavy, charged with anticipation of the impending arrival of Victoria Reed. The domestic staff moved with nervous efficiency, whispering in corners and avoiding direct eye contact with Grace whenever she walked through the central hallways with Oliver.

By mid-morning, Nathaniel had left for an emergency board meeting at his Manhattan headquarters, leaving Grace alone on the second floor. Though Nathaniel had assured her of her security, Grace felt an undeniable sense of foreboding.

At eleven o'clock, a sleek black town car pulled into the estate's winding cobblestone driveway. But it wasn't Victoria Reed who stepped out.

Grace was in the nursery organizing Oliver’s books when she heard the unmistakable sound of high heels clicking sharply against the marble floor of the main foyer. A few moments later, the nursery door swung open without a knock.

Sloane Whitaker stood in the doorway, dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat, holding a chic designer leather briefcase. Her face was a mask of cold, polite superiority.

Grace stood up immediately, stepping between Sloane and Oliver, who was playing with his wooden train set on the rug. "Miss Whitaker. You shouldn't be up here. The staff quarters and family rooms are private."

Sloane smiled smoothly, stepping into the room and letting her eyes slowly roam over the luxurious nursery furnishings before settling on Grace. "Private? My dear girl, I’ve sat in this very room with Nathaniel’s late wife, sipping tea while discussing foundation galas. You don't need to put on airs with me."

"Mr. Reed is at his office," Grace said evenly, refusing to back down. "If you wish to see him, you should schedule an appointment through his secretary."

"I’m not here to see Nathaniel," Sloane said softly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a thick, unmarked Manila envelope. "I’m here to see you, Grace."

Grace’s eyes narrowed. "What is this?"

"Consider it an intervention before things get unnecessarily messy," Sloane said, tossing the heavy envelope onto the nursery table. "Do you really think a man like Nathaniel Reed could ever genuinely care for someone like you? You are a temporary distraction. A convenient warm body to soothe his guilty conscious because he failed his dead wife."

Grace felt a sharp pang in her chest, but she kept her voice steady. "Nathaniel cares about his son. That is all that matters here."

"Is it?" Sloane sneered, tapping the envelope with a manicured finger. "Let's talk about what actually matters. Let's talk about Grace Miller—or should I say, Grace Vance?"

At the mention of that name, the blood drained entirely from Grace’s face. Her breathing hitched, her hands instinctively clenching into tight fists at her sides.

Sloane’s smile widened, seeing the reaction. "Ah, so you haven't forgotten your real name. My private investigator is exceedingly thorough, Grace. It took him less than forty-eight hours to unearth your fascinating little history in Chicago."

Sloane opened the envelope, pulling out several printed police reports and mugshots, sliding them across the table.

"Seven years ago," Sloane recited with cruel precision, "a young woman named Grace Vance was arrested in connection with a major financial embezzlement scheme at a high-end art gallery in downtown Chicago. Over three hundred thousand dollars vanished from client trust accounts. You spent two weeks in a county jail before the charges were mysteriously dropped due to lack of direct evidence, though your older brother, Marcus Vance, served three years in federal prison for grand larceny."

Sloane leaned closer, her eyes glittering with malicious triumph. "You changed your last name to your mother’s maiden name, fled Illinois, and buried your past under low-wage domestic service jobs in New York. Tell me, Grace... how do you think Nathaniel Reed—a man who manages billions of dollars in global assets—will react when he discovers his son’s beloved guardian is an ex-con with a family history of financial fraud?"

Grace stared at the documents on the table, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Tears of frustration and old, buried trauma prickled the corners of her eyes.

"I didn't steal anything," Grace whispered, her voice trembling with intense emotion. "I was twenty years old! My brother used my identity and signature without my knowledge to cover his gambling debts! I was completely exonerated by the state prosecutor!"

"Legal exoneration means nothing in high society," Sloane countered coldly. "The headline alone—'Billionaire’s Nanny Unmasked as Embezzler’s Sister'—will ruin the Reed family reputation. Victoria Reed will use this to strip Nathaniel of his board seat, and you will be blacklisted from every employment agency in the country."

Grace took a slow, deep breath, forcing her surging panic back down. She looked down at Oliver, who had stopped playing and was looking up at her with big, innocent blue eyes.

"What do you want, Sloane?" Grace asked quietly.

Sloane closed her briefcase with a sharp click. "Simple. You are going to pack your bags and leave this house tonight. You will write a note to Nathaniel stating that the pressure of the job was too much and that you’ve decided to return home. If you vanish quietly, these documents remain in my safe. If you stay, I deliver them personally to Nathaniel and his mother at dinner tomorrow night."

Sloane stepped past Grace, gently patting her shoulder with a cold, mock-affectionate gesture. "You have until midnight, Grace. Choose wisely."

Sloane walked out of the room, her heels clicking away down the long corridor, leaving Grace standing frozen in the silent nursery.

Grace dropped to her knees on the rug, burying her face in her hands. The past she had fought so desperately to escape had finally caught up to her, threatening to destroy the only true home and love she had found in years. As Oliver crawled over and placed a sticky hand against her face to comfort her, Grace knew she faced an agonizing choice: run away to protect Nathaniel and Oliver from scandal, or stay and fight a battle she was almost certain to lose.
