Chapter 18 - The New Generation

Spring melted into a vibrant, warm summer. The Reed estate was buzzing with quiet excitement and joyous preparations.
One bright Sunday morning, the family sat together in the sunny glass sunroom enjoying a fresh breakfast. Oliver, now nearly four years old, was sitting booster seat, enthusiastically eating strawberry pancakes while telling a long, animated story about his puppy’s imaginary space adventures.
Grace sat beside Nathaniel, dressed in a soft, white sundress. She reached for her glass of orange juice, but as the smell of the citrus hit her, a sudden wave of mild nausea swept over her. She quickly set the glass back down, pressing a napkin to her mouth.
Nathaniel’s corporate observational skills instantly picked up the subtle movement. He set down his coffee cup, his eyes narrowing with immediate concern.
"Grace? Are you feeling unwell?" Nathaniel asked, reaching across the table to touch her hand. "You’ve been looking tired for the last few days."
Grace looked at Nathaniel, a brilliant, radiant smile slowly breaking across her face. She reached into her handbag resting on the chair beside her, pulling out a small velvet box tied with a white silk ribbon, sliding it across the table toward him.
"I’m not sick, Nathaniel," Grace whispered, her eyes sparkling with joyful tears. "Open it."
Nathaniel picked up the small box with trembling fingers. He untied the ribbon and opened the lid. Inside lay a pair of tiny, handcrafted white baby booties, alongside a positive clear digital pregnancy test.
Nathaniel froze completely. His breath hitched in his throat, his dark eyes wide with utter shock and profound, overwhelming joy. He looked from the tiny booties up into Grace’s radiant face.
"Grace..." Nathaniel choked out, his voice cracking violently with pure emotion. "Are you... is this..."
"We’re having a baby, Nathaniel," Grace whispered, tears of joy spilling down her cheeks. "Oliver is going to be a big brother."
Nathaniel let out a breathless, joyful shout, pushing his chair back so hard it almost tipped over. He stood up, grabbed Grace by her waist, lifted her completely off her feet, and spun her around the sunroom, kissing her lips, her cheeks, and her neck with unbridled passion.
Oliver stopped eating his pancakes, looking at his parents with big, curious eyes before clapping his sticky hands happily. "Daddy! Are we dancing?!"
Nathaniel set Grace down gently, dropping to his knees beside Oliver’s chair, pulling the toddler into his arms while keeping one arm wrapped tightly around Grace’s waist.
"Ollie!" Nathaniel said, his voice thick with emotional tears, a massive smile spreading across his face. "Mommy is going to give us a new baby! You’re going to be a big brother!"
Oliver’s eyes went wide. "A baby?! Can I teach the baby how to build block castles?!"
"Yes, sweetheart," Grace laughed, kneeling down beside them, kissing Oliver’s forehead. "You get to teach the baby everything."
Oliver wrapped his tiny arms around Grace’s waist, pressing his face gently against her flat stomach. "Hello baby! I’m Ollie! I’m your big brother!"

Nathaniel pulled both of them into his massive, protective embrace, weeping openly with pure, unadulterated happiness.
Four years ago, he had stood in a cold, silent house, drowning in grief, believing his family’s story had ended in tragedy. Now, as he held his blooming wife and his vibrant son in the sunlit room, he knew their real story was only just beginning.
