Chapter 6 - The Matriarch's Arrival

The grand foyer of the Reed estate looked like a battlefield before a shot had even been fired. Standing beneath the soaring marble archway was Victoria Reed, a woman whose mere presence had commanded respect and fear in New York high society for over forty years. Dressed in a tailored dark navy Chanel suit, immaculate pearls, and a fur coat draped over her shoulders, she exuded an aura of unyielding authority. Flanking her were two personal assistants carrying luxury luggage, and standing right behind her, wearing a triumphant smile, was Sloane Whitaker.
Nathaniel walked down the sweeping grand staircase with calm, measured steps, his posture relaxed, his hands casually shoved into his trouser pockets. Grace followed two steps behind him, dressed impeccably in her new dark professional attire, her head held high despite the storm brewing below.
"Mother," Nathaniel said smoothly, reaching the bottom of the stairs. "You're early. I expected your flight from Paris to land tomorrow afternoon."
Victoria ignored his greeting entirely. Her cold, sharp eyes darted past her son, locking directly onto Grace with absolute disdain.
"I came early because I refused to let you ruin this family’s reputation for another twenty-four hours," Victoria declared, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I see you’ve kept her here. In my house."
"This is *my* house, Mother," Nathaniel corrected quietly, though the edge in his voice was sharp enough to slice glass. "And Grace is here because she is employed as Oliver’s legal guardian."
Sloane stepped forward, offering a dramatic sigh. "Victoria, I tried to warn Nathaniel privately yesterday. I gave Miss Vance—or Miller, whatever alias she’s using today—the opportunity to leave quietly to spare the family public embarrassment. But it seems she has manipulated Nathaniel even deeper than we feared."
Victoria held out her gloved hand, and Sloane immediately handed her a duplicate leather file containing the Chicago police records.
"Is this true, Nathaniel?" Victoria demanded, slapping the folder against her palm. "This girl is the sister of a convicted felon! She was arrested for grand larceny and embezzlement! She scrubbed our floors while concealing a criminal record!"
Mrs. Gable and several other household staff members gathered near the dining room entrance, whispering excitedly as they watched the matriarch humiliate Grace.
Nathaniel didn't even look at the folder. He took a single step forward, placing himself directly between his mother and Grace.
"I was fully aware of Grace’s background before I hired her, Mother," Nathaniel stated calmly. "She was completely exonerated of all charges seven years ago. She committed no crime. Her brother’s actions have nothing to do with her integrity."
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "You knew?! You knew you were bringing a girl associated with financial fraud into a home that holds millions in assets and the heir to the Reed estate?!"
"I brought a loving, honest human being into a home that was suffocating on grief and fake socialites," Nathaniel fired back, his voice rising with powerful intensity. "Grace has given Oliver more love, safety, and happiness in seven months than any of the eligible heiresses you’ve pushed on me for the last year!"
Sloane’s smile flickered and vanished. "Nathaniel, you are acting completely irrationally. She is a servant taking advantage of your grief!"
Nathaniel turned his dark, lethal gaze onto Sloane. "Miss Whitaker, you broke into my private residence yesterday, harassed my staff, and attempted to blackmail a member of my household. If you are not off my property within five minutes, I will personally contact the District Attorney and file charges for criminal trespassing and extortion."
Sloane went pale. "You wouldn't dare. My father is on your corporate board!"
"Then tell your father to expect my call at nine AM tomorrow when I remove him from that board," Nathaniel replied coldly. "Get out."
Sloane looked to Victoria for support, but Victoria was too stunned by her son’s fierce defiance to speak. Realizing she had lost control of the situation, Sloane sneered at Grace, turned on her designer heels, and stormed out through the grand double doors.
Victoria smoothed her coat, her face rigid with anger. "You may be able to intimidate young socialites, Nathaniel, but you cannot intimidate me. I am the matriarch of this family. As long as I hold a vote on the Reed Family Foundation, I will not allow this girl to raise my grandson. She leaves, or I will initiate a legal custody challenge for Oliver."
The threat hung in the air like poison. A custody battle led by Victoria Reed—with her endless fortunes and high-society connections—could drag on for years and traumatize young Oliver.
Grace stepped forward, stepping out from behind Nathaniel. She looked Victoria dead in the eye, her voice remarkably calm and steady.
"Mrs. Reed," Grace said softly. "You love Oliver. I know you do. But if you drag his name through a bitter court battle, you will hurt him far more than my presence ever could."
"How dare you speak to me—" Victoria began coldly.
"I don't care about your money, your foundation, or your social standing," Grace interrupted firmly, refusing to be silenced. "I care about a little boy who used to cry himself to sleep every night in an empty nursery because he missed his mother. If you want to judge me for my past, do so. But do not use your grandson as a weapon in your war for control."
Victoria froze. No servant—no person in her circle—had ever dared to speak to her with such raw, unfiltered honesty. She stared at Grace, looking for signs of deceit or fear, but found only fierce, maternal devotion.
Before Victoria could form a rebuttal, a tiny voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
"Grace?"
Oliver stood at the wooden railing in his soft blue pajamas, rubbing his eyes sleepily, clutching his worn stuffed rabbit. He looked down at the crowd in the foyer, his eyes bypassing his grandmother entirely, landing directly on Grace.
"Grace, up please," Oliver whimpered, extending his little arms.
Grace offered a quick, respectful nod to Victoria, then immediately ran up the stairs. She lifted Oliver into her arms, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead as the boy instantly settled against her shoulder, sucking his thumb peacefully.

Nathaniel turned back to his mother, his eyes filled with quiet triumph. "You see that, Mother? That isn't something money, pedigree, or legal threats can buy. That is trust. Now, you are welcome to stay in the east wing guest suite as my guest. But if you attempt to dislodge Grace from this family, you will lose me and Oliver forever."
Victoria stood alone in the grand marble foyer, watching her son walk up the stairs toward the maid and the toddler, realizing for the first time in her life that her absolute authority had finally met an unstoppable force.
