Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Zurich

The penthouse suite of the Laurent Tower was bathed in the cool, pale light of a pre-dawn moon. I sat at my mahogany desk, the glow of multiple computer monitors illuminating the forensic financial trails Margaret Shaw had spent the entire night unearthing. Helvetia Trust wasn't just a Swiss holding entity—it was the financial nexus of a massive international maritime cartel that had systematically swallowed independent shipping firms across the North Atlantic for over two decades.

And at the very center of that cartel sat a man the world believed had been buried under an avalanche in the Swiss Alps twenty years ago: Julian Vance, Harrison’s uncle.

The private elevator chimed softly, and Margaret walked into the study, looking exhausted but triumphant. She tossed a thick manila folder onto my desk. 'Facial recognition cross-referenced with Swiss immigration manifests from last month. Julian Vance didn't die in a skiing accident, Evelyn. He faked his death, transferred his assets into offshore shell companies, and operated behind the scenes while using the Vale family as a front to destroy your father’s shipping lines.'

I opened the folder, revealing a high-resolution surveillance photograph taken outside a private banking club in Zurich three weeks ago. An older man with silver hair, sharp aristocratic features, and cold, calculating eyes stepped out of a black Mercedes. The resemblance to Harrison Vance was undeniable.

'He’s back in Boston,' I stated quietly, tracing my finger over the photograph.

'Landed at Logan on a private Gulfstream yesterday evening,' Margaret confirmed, pulling out a seating chart. 'And he’s not just visiting. He’s scheduled to chair an emergency closed-door meeting with the Boston Port Authority board members tonight at the Harvard Club.'

I looked up from the photograph, a cold fire igniting in my chest. 'The Port Authority? They’re voting on the renewal of our exclusive municipal shipping dock leases tomorrow morning.'

'Exactly,' Margaret said grimly. 'If Julian Vance convinces the board to revoke Laurent Maritime’s operating licenses, our entire supply chain freezes within forty-eight hours. All our ships out in the Atlantic will have nowhere to dock.'

'He thinks he can destroy my father's legacy a second time,' I murmured, standing up from my desk and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window as the first rays of dawn broke over the harbor. 'He thinks because he’s operating from the shadows, he’s untouchable.'

'What’s your play, Evelyn?' Margaret asked, her eyes sharp with anticipation. 'We don't have enough time to get a federal injunction before tonight's meeting.'

'We don't need an injunction,' I replied softly, turning around with a razor-sharp smile. 'We need a counter-offensive. Call our contacts at the Boston Globe and the Federal Maritime Commission. Send them the complete financial trail linking Helvetia Trust to Julian Vance and Harrison Vance’s offshore accounts.'

'You're going to make it public before the meeting even starts?' Margaret gasped.

'I’m going to put the ghost of Zurich on the front page of every newspaper in New England before he even gets to pour his after-dinner brandy,' I said calmly. 'Let's see how confident he feels when federal investigators crash his private club meeting.'

Margaret stared at me for a second, then a slow, brilliant smile spread across her face. 'Consider the press packets dispatched, Boss. Welcome home, Julian.'
