Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

The holding room in the federal detention center smelled faintly of industrial bleach and stagnant coffee. The metal walls were painted a dull, institutional grey, and a single flickering fluorescent light overhead hummed with a low, nerve-fraying frequency. Adrian sat hunched over a bolted-down stainless-steel table, his hands cuffed to an iron ring in the center. His expensive Brioni suit was now hopelessly wrinkled, stained with mud from the Beacon Hill rain, and smelling of stale sweat.

The heavy steel door clicked open, and I stepped into the room, dressed in a sharp, slate-grey trench coat and leather gloves. I didn't sit down. I simply stood by the door, watching him with cold detachment.

Adrian snapped his head up at the sound of the latch. When he saw it was me instead of a public defender or a federal prosecutor, a desperate, pathetic light flickered in his bloodshot eyes.

'Evelyn!' he gasped, trying to stand up, but the handcuffs jerked him back down with a sharp clatter. 'Evelyn, thank God! You came! I knew you wouldn't just abandon me! We had a life together—twelve years! Please, tell these people there's been a mistake! Tell them you gave me permission to manage those accounts!'

I walked slowly across the concrete floor, my heels clicking rhythmically, stopping just two feet away from the table. I pulled off my left glove very deliberately, tossing it onto the stainless-steel surface.

'A mistake, Adrian?' I asked quietly. 'Which part was a mistake? The embezzlement, the shell companies, or the moment you handed me divorce papers between the soup and the dessert while your parents applauded?'

Adrian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. 'I was under pressure! The board was breathing down my neck! Celeste... Celeste threatened to expose our affair if I didn't give her a director position and corporate funds! It was all her! I was just weak!'

'Yes, Adrian,' I agreed calmly. 'You were weak. You were arrogant, greedy, and endlessly stupid. And now, you are paying the price for every single one of those traits.'

'Evelyn, please!' he sobbed, his voice cracking as tears spilled over his lower eyelids. 'I'll sign whatever you want! I'll give you a divorce on your terms! I'll walk away with nothing, just like you wanted! Just... just call off the federal prosecutor. Get me out of here!'

I leaned down slightly, resting my knuckles on the table, bringing my face inches from his. 'You already are walking away with nothing, Adrian. Exactly as you promised me at Maison Eve. The only difference is, you won't be doing it from a Beacon Hill condo. You'll be doing it from a six-by-eight cell in federal prison.'

'You're a monster!' Adrian suddenly screamed, his mask of pathetic supplication snapping instantly, replaced by a flash of his old, virulent rage. He lunged forward, the chains rattling violently against the steel table. 'You planned this! All of it! You trapped me! You engineered the whole damn thing!'

'I simply gave you enough rope, Adrian,' I whispered coldly, straightening up and pulling my glove back over my hand. 'And you gracefully hanged yourself with it.'

I turned around, walking toward the heavy steel door without looking back.

'Evelyn! EVELYN!' Adrian screamed behind me, his voice echoing frantically down the corridor as I tapped the glass for the guard to let me out. 'You can't do this to a Vale! MY FAMILY OWNS THIS CITY!'

I paused with my hand on the latch, looking back over my shoulder one last time.

'Not anymore, Adrian,' I said, and walked out into the light.
