Chapter 14 - The Whispering Docks

The rain returned to Boston by late November, drumming a steady, relentless rhythm against the reinforced glass of my penthouse office. I sat at my mahogany desk, reviewing the final restructuring manifests for Laurent Maritime’s new transatlantic shipping routes. Every vessel bearing our insignia now moved across the ocean unhindered, a testament to absolute corporate sovereignty.

The private elevator chime echoed softly, signaling a visitor. A moment later, Margaret Shaw walked in, carrying a slim leather folder containing confidential intelligence reports from our European division.

'Evelyn,' Margaret said, setting the folder down on the desk. 'Our security audit of the Zurich banking accounts linked to Julian Vance has yielded an unexpected secondary trail. It appears the cartel wasn't just operating in Boston and Zurich. They had active dormant subsidiaries registered in Montreal and London.'

I opened the folder, scanning the corporate registry numbers. 'Dormant subsidiaries? Or sleeper cells waiting for an opportunity to buy back distressed maritime assets?'

'A bit of both,' Margaret replied, pulling out a seating chart. 'According to these records, a mysterious holding entity called *North Atlantic Holdings* has been quietly buying up minor shares in our secondary shipping suppliers over the past three weeks. They’re trying to build a backdoor block to influence our board votes.'

A cold, calculated smile touched my lips. 'They think they can sneak through the back door while everyone is focused on the federal trials downtown.'

'Shall I deploy our acquisition team to buy out those secondary shares before they reach voting threshold?' Margaret asked, her eyes sharp with professional readiness.

'Do better than that,' I instructed quietly, closing the folder. 'Let them think they’re succeeding. Let them buy up every available share on the open market for the next forty-eight hours. Drive the stock price up.'

Margaret raised an eyebrow, a knowing grin spreading across her face. 'And then?'

'And then, on Friday morning, we trigger a massive secondary share issuance, diluting their position to absolute irrelevance while our primary holding company executes a hostile buyout of their parent entity,' I said smoothly. 'If they want to play corporate chess with Laurent Maritime, let's bankrupt them before the weekend.'

'It’s brilliant, Evelyn,' Margaret laughed softly, tucking the folder under her arm. 'I’ll coordinate with our London brokers immediately.'

As Margaret turned toward the door, my secure desk phone flashed with an encrypted internal notification. I pressed the receiver button.

'Ms. Laurent,' security chief Thomas spoke through the intercom. 'We have a visitor at the lobby reception. Refuses to leave without speaking to you personally. Claims it’s an urgent personal matter regarding your family’s history.'

I paused, my fingers resting on the edge of the desk. 'Who is it, Thomas?'

'A woman, ma'am. Says her name is Sarah Vance. Harrison’s estranged sister.'
