Chapter 20 - The Sovereign Horizon

Six months after the summit in Geneva, the global shipping landscape had been completely redrawn. Oakhaven Maritime was no longer a shadowy cartel; it was a wholly owned European subsidiary of Laurent Maritime. From Boston to London, Zurich to Singapore, the golden crest of our fleet dominated every major trade route across the globe.

I stood once more on the wrap-around balcony of the Laurent Tower penthouse in Boston, holding a crystal glass of aged scotch as the golden hues of a summer sunset spread across the harbor. The city below hummed with vibrant, unstoppable energy—a city where my father’s name was no longer a ghost of past ruin, but a permanent symbol of absolute triumph.

The private elevator chime pinged softly behind me, and footsteps padded across the hardwood floor. Margaret Shaw stepped onto the balcony, holding a final quarterly audit report bound in midnight-blue leather.

'The global consolidation is officially complete, Evelyn,' Margaret reported with a bright, triumphant smile. 'Laurent Maritime is now the undisputed leader of international freight logistics. Wall Street is projecting record dividends for the fiscal year.'

I smiled, taking a slow sip of the scotch, feeling the warm burn settle in my chest. 'And the Vales? And the Vances?'

'Adrian is currently serving year one of his twenty-year federal sentence at Devens, working laundry duty,' Margaret said smoothly. 'His parents are living in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Worcester, subsisting entirely on state pensions. Harrison and Julian are locked away in maximum-security federal custody with no possibility of parole. Their names have been completely expunged from Boston high society.'

I nodded slowly, looking out across the sparkling harbor where a dozen of our massive container ships sailed smoothly toward the horizon, their lights twinkling like stars against the darkening water.

'Good,' I murmured quietly. 'Let them watch.'

Margaret placed the midnight-blue portfolio on the glass railing, lingering for a moment before turning back toward the penthouse. 'What’s next, Evelyn? We've conquered Boston, we've conquered Europe. Where do we go from here?'

I looked out toward the vast, endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean where the sun dipped below the edge of the world, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the sky.

I raised my glass toward the open horizon.

May you like

'Everywhere, Margaret,' I replied softly, a quiet, fearless smile gracing my lips. 'Everywhere.'
