Chapter 8 - The Ascent of Laurent Maritime

Three weeks after the fall of Vale Meridian, the grand reopening gala of Laurent Maritime Corporation—formerly the bankrupt husk of Vale Meridian Logistics—was held in the magnificent glass-domed grand ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel. The city's elite, who had spent the last twenty years kissing the rings of Victor and Lenora Vale, now lined up eagerly along the red velvet carpet just for a chance to catch a glimpse of the new undisputed queen of Boston commerce.

I stood on the mezzanine overlooking the glittering ballroom, wearing a backless, midnight-blue silk velvet gown embroidered with subtle silver thread that caught the crystal chandelier light with every movement. My hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, held by a diamond hairpin that had belonged to my mother before the Vales stole her company into ruin.

Margaret Shaw walked up beside me, handing me a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon. 'The latest acquisition papers for the Atlantic shipping lanes just cleared customs in London,' Margaret murmured with a satisfied smile. 'Laurent Maritime now controls eighty-five percent of all freight logistics along the northeastern seaboard. Your father’s legacy isn't just restored—it’s expanded beyond anything Victor Vale could have ever dreamed of.'

I clinked my champagne glass against hers. 'It’s only the beginning, Margaret. The global market is wide open.'

'By the way,' Margaret added casually, lowering her voice. 'Adrian’s trial date has been set for November. Federal prosecutors have rejected all plea bargains. With the forensic trail we provided, he’s looking at a minimum of twenty years without parole. His parents are facing asset forfeiture on every personal property they own, including their Weston estate. They’ll be living in a suburban motel by the end of the month.'

I turned my gaze toward the grand staircase as the double doors opened below. A familiar figure stood hesitating at the threshold—Celeste, dressed in a cheap, off-the-rack black dress that looked completely out of place among the designer haute couture of Boston society. She had managed to make bail, but her accounts were frozen, her job was gone, and her social standing had evaporated overnight.

She scanned the crowded ballroom, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation as she realized whose name was emblazoned in glowing gold letters across the stage banner: *LAURENT MARITIME: FOUNDED 1974. RESTORED 2026.*

Before Celeste could turn around and slip back out into the night, two private security guards stepped smoothly into her path, politely but firmly escorting her back down the steps toward the exit.

I watched her expulsion with quiet indifference, taking a slow sip of my champagne.

'Evelyn,' a smooth, cultured voice interrupted from behind me. I turned to find Arthur Pendelton’s former vice president, a man who had voted to oust my father two decades ago, standing there with a nervous, ingratiating smile, holding out a business card. 'Ms. Laurent... truly an astonishing transformation. I was wondering if we might schedule a brief meeting next week to discuss potential advisory roles—'

I looked down at the business card, then raised my eyes to meet his sweating, anxious face.

'I don't hire men who lack backbones, Arthur junior,' I said, my voice carrying clearly across the terrace. 'And I certainly don't do business with cowards who stood by while my family was destroyed.'

He flushed deeply, bowed his head in mortification, and melted back into the crowd without another word.

I turned back toward the sparkling harbor, watching the massive container ships gliding smoothly across the dark water under the banner of Laurent Maritime. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, and the new world belonged entirely to me.
