Chapter 13 - The Echoes of Empire

The autumn wind whistled through the golden elms of Boston Common, carrying the sharp, clean scent of salt air up from the harbor. I walked alone along the winding gravel paths, my long wool coat wrapped tightly around me, watching the children chase pigeons across the crisp autumn grass. For the first time in twelve years, the relentless weight that had settled upon my chest the day my father died felt completely gone.
The morning newspapers blared headlines across every major newsstand from New York to London: *THE FALL OF THE VANCE CARTEL: HOW LAURENT MARITIME CLEANED UP BOSTON HARBOR.* Julian Vance was behind bars awaiting federal trial alongside Harrison Vance, whose firm had been dissolved by emergency court order. The Vales were bankrupt, disgraced, and forgotten by the very society that once bowed to their name.
My cell phone buzzed softly in my coat pocket. I pulled it out and saw Margaret Shaw’s direct line flashing on the screen.
'Go ahead, Margaret,' I answered calmly.
'Evelyn, you need to see this,' Margaret’s voice came through the speaker, tinged with a strange mix of amusement and disbelief. 'A courier just dropped off a hand-delivered letter at the corporate reception desk. It’s from Adrian... sent directly from the federal penitentiary in Devens.'
I paused by a stone bench, watching a lone sailboat glide across the distant Charles River. 'Adrian? I thought inmate communications were restricted.'
'He managed to bribe a guard or use a contraband phone, typical Adrian fashion,' Margaret replied dryly. 'Do you want me to shred it, or shall I read you the highlights?'
'Read it,' I said quietly.
There was a brief rustle of paper on the other end of the line, followed by Margaret clearing her throat. *'Evelyn. I know you probably won't read this, and I know I destroyed everything. But I'm sitting in this cold cell, wearing this orange uniform, and I realize what a monster I was. Celeste left me the second my accounts were frozen—she’s currently working as a hostess in Miami under an alias. My parents are in a cheap motel in Worcester, completely broke. I lost everything, Evelyn. The company, the house, my name. If you have a shred of mercy left in your heart for the man you once married... please, just send word. Help me get out of here.'*
Margaret went silent for a moment, waiting for my reaction. 'Shall I send it to the federal prosecutor as evidence of continued harassment, Evelyn?'
I looked out across the park, watching the leaves fall gently from the trees, dancing in the autumn breeze. The man who had sat across from me at Maison Eve, sneering while his parents applauded my ruin, was now nothing more than a pathetic ghost crying in a dark cell.
'No, Margaret,' I whispered softly. 'Let him keep the letter. Let him sit in that cell every single day and remember exactly how it feels to have absolute zero.'
'Understood,' Margaret replied, a faint smile evident in her tone. 'By the way, the board of directors is waiting for you in the executive suite. The transatlantic expansion into European shipping lanes is ready for your final sign-off.'
'Tell them I’ll be there in twenty minutes,' I said, hanging up the phone.

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, took one last deep breath of the crisp Boston air, and turned toward the towering glass silhouette of the Laurent Tower gleaming proudly against the afternoon sun. The game was over. The empire was restored. And my true reign had only just begun.
