Chapter 2 - The Fall of Vale Meridian

The silence in the private dining room of Maison Eve became so absolute that you could hear the faint hum of the temperature-controlled wine cellar down the hall. Adrian stared blankly at the gold-embossed seals resting on the heavy parchment papers spread across the table before him. His face, usually flushed with the arrogance of inherited wealth, turned an alarming shade of pale ash.
'This... this is a forgery,' Adrian stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he grabbed the top document. His knuckles turned stark white. 'Maison Eve is owned by the Vales! My grandfather founded the holding company that backs this property! My father sits on the board of trustees!'
Margaret Shaw didn't even blink. She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a certified state audit report, and slid it across the white linen tablecloth. 'Your grandfather founded a shell corporation, Adrian, yes. But in 2014, when Vale Meridian Logistics was drowning in debt after your disastrous expansion into European freight, that shell corporation went into default. Evelyn bought the controlling debt through a private holding entity registered in Delaware under her maiden name: Laurent Holdings LLC.'
Victor Vale surged out of his chair, knocking his mahogany dining chair backward with a loud crash that startled the waiters waiting outside. 'That’s impossible! Evelyn was just a decorative wife! She spent her days at art galleries and charity bake sales! She doesn't even have a college degree in business!'
'Actually, Victor, I graduated magna cum laude from Wharton with a degree in corporate finance and strategic acquisitions,' I said softly, picking up my water glass and taking a delicate sip. 'I just found it infinitely more peaceful to let you all assume I was an empty-headed trophy wife. It made listening to your tedious dinner table lectures about corporate dominance so much more entertaining.'
Lenora clutched her diamond necklace as if she were suddenly choking. 'Adrian! Do something! Call our corporate lawyers! Have this woman arrested for fraud!'
'Mom, shut up!' Adrian snapped, his hands shaking visibly as he flipped through page after legal page of the dossier Margaret had provided. Every single document bore the official seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, verified signatures, and notarized transfer of titles. 'Evelyn... what is the meaning of this? If you own the restaurant, and you own the holding company... what about Vale Meridian? What about my shares?'
'Your shares, Adrian, are currently worth precisely zero dollars,' Margaret answered smoothly, folding her hands over her portfolio. 'As of 8:00 AM this morning, Vale Meridian Logistics missed its primary debt covenant payment to Laurent Holdings. Under the terms of the collateral agreement signed by you and your father three years ago—when you desperately needed a cash injection to cover your embezzlement losses—all voting rights and operational control reverted instantly to the majority lienholder.'
Celeste stood up abruptly, her chair scraping harshly against the parquet floor. Her face was twisted in absolute fury. 'Adrian, what is she talking about? You told me Vale Meridian was completely debt-free! You told me we were going to liquidate her assets and buy a penthouse in Miami!'
'Shut up, Celeste, I didn't know!' Adrian roared back, his facade of composed corporate dominance completely shattering. He turned back to me, his eyes wide, pleading, and desperate. 'Evelyn, please. We can talk about this. Twelve years of marriage! We can go home, we can cancel the divorce, we can kick Celeste out right now—'
I held up a single hand, stopping him mid-sentence. The disgust rolling off him was palpable. Only minutes ago, he had been smiling while his parents applauded my utter ruin. Now, staring face-to-face with his own financial annihilation, he was willing to discard his mistress like an old shoe just to save his own skin.
'Home, Adrian?' I asked, tilting my head. 'Which home? The Beacon Hill townhouse? I'm afraid that property was purchased under Laurent Holdings as well. In fact, the eviction notice was served to your personal locker at the office twenty minutes ago. Your clothes aren't in an Uber with the doorman, Adrian. They are currently sitting in three heavy-duty plastic garbage bags by the loading dock outside.'
Celeste let out a sharp gasp of disbelief, glaring daggers at Adrian. 'You lied to me! You told me you owned everything! You told me your wife was a penniless nobody!'
'She is a nobody!' Victor shouted, his face purple with unbridled rage as he lunged across the table toward me. 'You ungrateful, scheming little bitch—'
Before Victor could take two steps, the private dining room door swung open wider. Two burly, uniformed Boston police officers stepped inside, flanked by Maison Eve’s private security detail. The lead officer rested his hand casually on his holster, casting a cold, professional eye over the enraged patriarch.
'Is there a problem here, Mr. Vale?' the officer asked, looking directly at Victor. 'We received a direct call from Laurent Holdings regarding corporate harassment, property trespassing, and physical threats made against the primary stakeholder on private premises.'
Victor froze mid-lunge, his arms suspended in the air. He slowly lowered himself back down, breathing heavily, sweat beading on his forehead.
I stood up smoothly from my chair, smoothing down the front of my emerald green dress. I looked down at Adrian, who was slumped in his seat, staring blankly at the empty plate where his chocolate soufflé was beginning to melt.

'Enjoy your dessert, Adrian,' I said softly, turning toward the door. 'You're going to need all the sugar you can get for the bankruptcy hearings tomorrow morning.'
