Chapter 10 - The Turning Tide

The attempted ambush on Maple Street made front-page news the following morning. The headline in the *Chicago Tribune* read: *'Intimidation Attempt on Scalding Victim Backfires: Syndicate Links Exposed.'*
Detective Miller strode into Laura Chen’s office carrying a thick case file stamped with federal task force seals. He dropped it onto the desk with a heavy thud. 'Well, Mrs. Sterling, your little alley incident just blew the doors off Victor Vance’s entire operation. The thug you pepper-sprayed? Turned out he had an active federal warrant and decided to cut a deal immediately.'
'What did he give you?' I asked, sitting across the desk with my arms crossed.
'Everything,' Miller smiled grimly. 'He gave us the ledger of payoffs, the money-laundering shell companies, and—most importantly—recorded phone calls proving that Victor Vance and Diane Sterling coordinated the financial pressure campaign against you to force the sale of the house.'
Laura leaned back, folding her hands. 'So Diane isn't just an accessory to the assault; she’s an active co-conspirator in federal racketeering and extortion.'
'Precisely,' Miller nodded. 'Her bail request was denied permanently. And Marcus Vance has officially filed to withdraw as Ryan’s defense counsel, citing an irreconcilable conflict of interest now that his brother Victor is facing federal indictment.'

I stared out the window, watching the rain wash down the glass panes. 'Ryan must be losing his mind.'
'He’s blaming everyone,' Miller said. 'First Diane, then Victor, and now he’s begging for a plea deal in exchange for testifying against his mother. But the prosecutor isn't interested. We have the kitchen camera footage. We have the audio. We have the financial trail. They are going down for a very long time.'
