Chapter 17 - Ashes to Architecture

Three months after the verdict, spring finally returned to Chicago, melting the lingering winter snow and bringing new life to the city streets. I stood on the front porch of my father’s house, holding a steaming cup of black coffee, watching the morning sun catch the polished oak door.
The criminal trials were over. Victor Vance and his syndicate were locked away in maximum-security federal facilities, awaiting trials that would span decades. The assets seized from Sterling Architecture had been liquidated, with a portion redirected into a foundation for domestic abuse survivors named after my father.
Laura Chen drove up the gravel driveway in her sleek black sedan, stepping out with a thick manila folder tucked under her arm.
'Morning, boss,' Laura smiled, walking up the steps. 'The final paperwork for the absolute deed transfer is complete. The house is 100% yours, free and clear of all liens, mortgages, and syndicate claims.'
I took the folder, tracing my fingers over the embossed seal. 'Thank you, Laura. For everything.'
'What are you going to do with it?' she asked, looking around the peaceful neighborhood. 'Are you going to live here?'
May you like
'No,' I smiled softly, looking back toward the kitchen window where the sun streamed through the glass. 'I’m turning it into a sanctuary and legal aid clinic for women escaping violent marriages. My father built this house to protect his family. It’s time it protected everyone else's.'
Laura grinned, shaking her head. 'Your father would be damn proud of you, Melissa.'
