Chapter 11 - The Secret Compartment

With the house temporarily under federal protection during the criminal investigation, I finally returned to my childhood home to retrieve personal belongings. The house was exactly as my father had left it—warm wood tones, bookshelves lined with engineering manuals, and the faint, comforting scent of cedar and old paper.
I walked into the kitchen. The spot near the stove had been professionally cleaned by forensics, but I could still see the faint discoloration on the baseboard where the boiling liquid had splashed.
I stood there for a long moment, closing my eyes, letting the memory wash over me until the fear lost its grip. Then I walked down the basement stairs to my father’s workshop.
My father had spent his final years tinkering with custom security hardware. I ran my fingers along the workbench until I found a small brass toggle switch hidden beneath the wooden lip. I clicked it.
With a soft mechanical click, a section of the wood-paneled wall slid open, revealing a hidden wall safe.
Inside the safe weren't gold bars or cash. There was a single manila envelope labeled in my father’s precise handwriting: *'For Melissa — When the wolves come knocking.'*
