Chapter 18 - The Unseen Camera

A week before the grand opening of the Bennett Foundation legal clinic, I returned to the house to oversee the final interior renovations. The contractors were finishing up in the kitchen, replacing the old countertops and installing modern, state-of-the-art safety fixtures.
As I walked past the pantry, I noticed something odd near the upper molding. A tiny, recessed metallic gleam—a lens I hadn't noticed before.
Curious, I climbed a small step stool and inspected it closely. It was an older analog micro-lens wired directly into the wall framing, predating even the digital camera my father had installed.
I unscrewed the tiny faceplate with a flathead screwdriver and slid out a micro-SD card coated in a thin layer of dust. My heart skipped a beat.
I took the card down to the basement workshop, slotted it into my laptop, and opened the media player.
The file was dated four years ago—six months before Ryan and I were even married. The video showed Ryan standing in the kitchen, speaking on a phone while pacing back and forth.

Listen closely to the audio. Ryan wasn't talking to a business client. He was talking to Diane.
'Don't worry, Mom,' Ryan’s voice echoed from the speakers, smooth and calculating. 'Once I marry her and get my name on the secondary deed, the old man’s house is ours. Just like we did with Clara. Accidents happen all the time in kitchens.'
