Chapter 13 - Reopening the Cold Case

The discovery of Clara Vance’s suppressed file turned the entire legal landscape upside down. By sunrise, Detective Miller had mobilized a cold-case homicide squad to exhume Clara’s body and re-examine the original Lake Michigan incident report.

Marcus Vance, now representing himself and distancing entirely from his fugitive brother Victor, rushed to Cook County Jail to confront Ryan. But the damage was already done. Confronted with the new murder charges, Ryan’s arrogant facade completely collapsed.

I sat in Laura Chen’s office watching a live feed of the precinct press conference. Chief of Police Henderson stood at the podium, flashbulbs popping relentlessly.

*'We are officially reopening the 2021 death of Clara Sterling as a premeditated homicide investigation,'* Chief Henderson announced into a forest of microphones. *'Evidence recovered from a private archive links the suspect, Ryan Sterling, to a pattern of violent property acquisitions targeting inherited real estate.'*Laura turned off the monitor and looked at me with deep admiration in her eyes. 'You didn't just defend your father’s house, Melissa. You took down a monster who had been operating with impunity for years.'

'It’s not over yet,' I replied quietly. 'There’s still the civil trial for full asset forfeiture, and Victor Vance is still at large.'

As if on cue, my phone chimed with an encrypted text message from an unknown sender. It was a single digital photograph: a close-up shot of my current apartment building, taken from across the street through a telephoto lens.

Beneath the photo was a text: *'You can lock up Ryan, but you can't stop the family.'*
