Chapter 3 - The Attorney's Gambit

Laura Chen’s office was located on the fourth floor of a brick building overlooking downtown Chicago. It was cluttered with legal briefs, leather-bound statutes, and empty coffee cups. Laura herself was a formidable woman in her late forties, sharp-eyed and relentlessly methodical.
She slid a manila folder across her mahogany desk. Inside were forensic printouts and encrypted drive backups. 'The cloud server backup was automatic,' Laura explained, tapping her pen against the desk. 'Your father was a paranoid engineer, Melissa. He configured the kitchen backup to sync instantly via satellite relay before any physical local drive could be seized or smashed.'
'Did the encryption hold?' I asked, leaning forward.
'It didn't just hold; it captured 4K audio and video with pristine clarity,' Laura smiled grimly. 'Not only can we prove Ryan shoved you, but we also have Diane’s exact words: *"Maybe now she’ll stop being selfish."* That makes her an accessory before and after the fact.'
'I don't want a quick settlement, Laura,' I said, adjusting the sleeve of my cardigan over my bandaged arm. 'I want a public indictment. I want them to feel every ounce of terror they inflicted on me.'
'Then we need to time this perfectly,' Laura warned. 'If we move too fast, Ryan’s defense attorney—Marcus Vance, Victor’s brother—will try to claim the footage was digitally altered. We need an independent digital forensics expert to authenticate the metadata.'
'Get the best one money can buy,' I instructed. 'Use the liquid assets from my father’s commercial accounts. Ryan thinks I’m broke because he locked down our joint checking. He doesn't know about my trust.'

Laura raised an eyebrow. 'A secret trust? Your father really thought of everything, didn't he?'
'He knew men like Ryan long before I ever met them,' I murmured. 'He just prayed I’d never have to use it.'
