Chapter 10 - The Mid-Gala Betrayal

To understand how we reached this precipice of blood and betrayal, the clock had to turn back three weeks to the night of the Entrepreneur of the Year Gala itself—the glittering, champagne-soaked evening that preceded the horror by the fireplace.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a symphony of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and whispered ambitions. Over five hundred of the city's elite—venture capitalists, tech moguls, and corrupt politicians—had gathered to celebrate my success. I stood at the podium in a custom gold-thread gown, holding the heavy crystal award that would later become the weapon used against me.
"Thank you," I had spoken into the microphone, my voice echoing across the ballroom to thunderous applause. "Vanguard Technologies was built on the belief that integrity and innovation must go hand in hand."
From the front table, Daniel had smiled and clapped louder than anyone, his eyes shining with fabricated pride. Beside him, Vanessa beamed in her silver gown, blowing me a kiss. If anyone had told me in that exact second that both of them were quietly plotting my execution and financial ruin, I would have laughed in their faces.
Yet, even then, the rot was deep.
Earlier that evening, while I was backstage preparing my speech, my phone had buzzed with an anonymous notification: *'Check your husband's browser history on the shared iPad.'*
Curiosity getting the better of me, I had unlocked the device in our dressing room. What I found made my blood run cold: searches for offshore asset concealment, mental incompetence legal frameworks, and encrypted messaging apps shared between Daniel and Vanessa. They hadn't just been having a casual affair; they had been orchestrating my corporate decapitation for over a year.
I hadn't confronted them right then. I wasn't a fool. I knew that accusing a charismatic academic and a beloved best friend in public would only make me look paranoid, unstable, and hysterical. So I played the long game. I called Marcus Hale immediately, instructing him to install the secret recorder inside the hollow base of the award I was about to receive.

"If they're going to try to rob me," I had whispered to Marcus over an encrypted line in the VIP lounge, "I want every single word captured in high definition."
Now, standing in the present day, watching the news reports flash across the lobby screens of Vanguard Technologies, I realized that the gala night was not just a celebration of my triumph—it was the night I walked into a slaughterhouse and walked out a predator.
