Chapter 9 - The Confession on Tape

The interrogation room at the downtown federal precinct was suffocatingly small, lit by a harsh, flickering fluorescent tube overhead. A single two-way mirror occupied the entire length of the back wall, behind which Marcus and I stood in total darkness, watching every twitch and sweat bead on Daniel Vance's face.

Daniel sat at the metal table in handcuffs, his expensive bespoke suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled. he looked pathetic compared to the commanding CEO who had tried to usurp my board just hours earlier.

The door swung open, and Detective Miller—a seasoned financial crimes investigator whom Marcus had known for years—slammed a thick manila folder onto the table.

"Alright, Mr. Vance, let's stop playing games," Detective Miller said, pulling out a chair and sitting down heavily. "We have the audio recording from the trophy. We have the wire transfer logs pointing to Meridian Holdings. And just ten minutes ago, your girlfriend Vanessa confessed to the entire conspiracy, including the fact that you struck Elena with the crystal award."

Daniel sneered, leaning back in his chair with a pathetic display of defiance. "Vanessa is hysterical and lying. Show me a signed confession or official court order. Until then, I want my lawyer present. I'm not saying another word."

"Your lawyer, Julian Sterling, was just picked up by federal agents at his law firm for aiding and abetting corporate embezzlement," Detective Miller replied smoothly, sliding a printed arrest warrant across the table. "He's already cooperating in exchange for a reduced sentence. He gave us the password to your encrypted offshore accounts, Daniel. Everything is frozen."

Daniel’s defiant expression vanished instantly. The blood drained from his face, leaving a sickly gray pallor. He stared at the warrant, his lips trembling. "No... that's impossible. Julian wouldn't fold that fast..."

"He folded the second he realized you were planning to pin the entire conspiracy on him," Miller said, leaning forward. "Here is your choice, Daniel. You sign a full, uncoerced confession detailing how you and Vanessa planned the attempted murder and financial takeover, and I'll recommend thirty years instead of life without parole."

Behind the two-way mirror, I watched Daniel's shoulders slump in absolute defeat. The invincible academic, the man who thought he could outsmart the woman who built an empire, was completely broken.

He picked up the pen with shaking fingers.

"Do it," I whispered softly to the empty dark room, watching my husband sign away what little dignity he had left.

Marcus placed a hand gently on my shoulder. "It's over, Elena. You won."

"No, Marcus," I replied, turning away from the glass. "This isn't the end. This is only chapter nine. The real world outside these walls is watching, and my empire still needs to be rebuilt from the ashes.
