Chapter 14 - The Auditor’s Revelation

Back at Vanguard Technologies headquarters, the forensic audit of Meridian Holdings was yielding astonishing results. I sat at my desk reviewing the encrypted financial ledgers alongside Marcus Hale and our chief forensic accountant, David Chen.
David pushed his glasses up his nose, pointing a laser pointer at a complex digital transaction map on the main display wall. "Mrs. Vance, we traced the initial venture capital funding for Meridian Holdings back eighteen months. It didn't come from domestic accounts, and it didn't come from Daniel's personal savings."
"Where did it come from?" I asked, leaning forward.
"A Swiss umbrella conglomerate called Sovereign Capital," David explained, tapping the screen to bring up a corporate registry file. "And Sovereign Capital is wholly owned by Apex Global—our primary corporate competitor in the global tech acquisition market."
My breath caught in my throat. Apex Global. For months, Apex had been trying to acquire Vanguard Technologies through hostile takeover bids, all of which I had categorically rejected. They hadn't just been waiting for us to fail on the open market; they had planted Daniel inside my life years ago to infiltrate my company from within.
"Daniel wasn't just a cheating husband," Marcus realized aloud, his eyes widening in realization. "He was a corporate spy planted by Apex Global from the very beginning. His marriage to you was a long-term corporate infiltration strategy."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Every anniversary, every shared dream of building a life together, every whispered 'I love you' across our dining table—all of it had been a calculated, manufactured lie designed to steal my life's work.
"Apex Global's CEO is Viktor Sterling," I murmured, recalling the ruthless Russian-American billionaire who ruled the tech sector with an iron fist. "And their primary domestic acquisition partner is none other than Arthur Sterling—our lead board member."
Arthur Sterling. The man who had chaired the board meeting and almost granted Daniel emergency control of my company.
"Arthur Sterling is Viktor's uncle," Marcus said grimly, pulling up Arthur's hidden financial disclosures. "He used his position on your board to orchestrate the internal vulnerability that allowed Daniel to access your reserve accounts."

I stood up slowly from my desk, a cold, unyielding rage washing over every fiber of my being. They thought they could use me, break me, and throw me away like a discarded toy. They had no idea what kind of monster they had just awakened.
"Cancel all pending acquisition talks with Apex Global," I commanded, my voice ice-cold. "And prepare an emergency shareholders' meeting for eight o'clock tomorrow morning. We are going to strip Arthur Sterling of his board seat, purge every Apex sympathizer from our ranks, and declare total war.
