Chapter 5 - The Incapacity Trap

The executive boardroom of Vanguard Technologies was a fortress of polished mahogany, bulletproof glass, and intimidating silence. Twelve members of the board of directors sat around the massive conference table, their expressions a mixture of nervous anticipation and grim solemnity.

At the head of the table sat Daniel Vance. He had placed my medical chart—falsified by his own bribed doctors—right in front of the lead board member, Arthur Sterling.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Daniel began, his voice dripping with theatrical sorrow as he wiped an imaginary tear from his eye. "As you all know by now, my dear wife and our visionary founder, Elena, suffered a tragic accident last night. Due to severe exhaustion and acute psychological distress following the gala, she has been hospitalized and placed under heavy sedation."

Murmurs rippled through the boardroom. Arthur Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, peering down at the medical report. "This is a tremendous shock, Daniel. Is her condition stable?"

"Physically, she is recovering," Daniel lied smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket to project authority. "However, her neurological evaluation indicates temporary cognitive impairment. Her physicians have stated unequivocally that she is unfit to make rational business decisions for the foreseeable future. As her husband and co-founder, legally and morally, I must step in to protect Vanguard Technologies from market instability."

"And what exactly are you proposing, Daniel?" asked Beatrice Thorne, the head of shareholder relations, her eyes narrowing with calculated suspicion. She had never entirely trusted Daniel's academic charm.

"Emergency temporary receivership," Daniel replied, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the mahogany table. "Granting me full executive signing authority and control over the corporate reserve accounts until Elena is fully recovered. If we don't act before the market opens at nine o'clock, our quarterly acquisition talks with Apex Global will collapse."

Arthur Sterling picked up a pen, looking around the room for consensus. "Well, under clause fourteen of our corporate charter, incapacitation of the CEO permits temporary transfer of power to the primary spouse, provided three board members second the motion..."

"I second the motion," said corporate counsel hastily.

"And I," muttered another compromised board member.

Daniel suppressed a triumphant smile. He was seconds away from signing away my entire empire, locking me out of my own accounts, and cementing his victory.

"Wait," a sharp, crystal-clear voice echoed from the heavy oak double doors at the back of the boardroom.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

The heavy doors swung wide open. I stood on the threshold, wearing a sharp white pantsuit that contrasted sharply with the white bandage still visible beneath my perfectly styled blonde hair. I walked into the room with absolute poise, my heels clicking sharply against the polished floor, looking every bit the ruthless entrepreneur who had built an empire from scratch.

Daniel’s face drained of all color. He staggered backward, gripping the edge of the table as if he had just seen a ghost rising from the grave.
