Chapter 15 - Confrontation at the Penthouse

Midnight fell over the city like a shroud of black velvet. I sat alone in the dim quiet of my penthouse living room, a glass of bourbon resting untouched on the coffee table. The city lights twinkled outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, indifferent to the corporate war raging beneath them.
The private elevator chime broke the silence.
I didn't turn around. I sat facing the fireplace where just days ago I had lain bleeding, waiting for the inevitable guest.
The elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic hiss. Footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor—slow, deliberate, and entirely unafraid.
"You've been making quite a lot of noise this week, Elena," a smooth, deep voice resonated through the penthouse.
I turned my head slowly. Standing near the foyer was Viktor Sterling himself—tall, immaculate in a dark winter coat, silver-streaked hair framing a face carved from granite. He looked at me not with hostility, but with the detached curiosity of a scientist inspecting a fascinating specimen under a microscope.
"Viktor," I said calmly, standing up from my chair and buttoning my jacket. "You take great risks visiting uninvited. My security director, Marcus, has a very trigger-happy finger these days."
Viktor let out a low, smooth chuckle, stepping further into the room. "Marcus Hale is currently indisposed, dealing with a very convincing decoy security breach on the lower harbor docks. You are quite alone tonight, Elena."
"Am I?" I asked, a faint, confident smile touching my lips.
Viktor stopped a few feet away, crossing his arms. "Let's be pragmatic, Elena. Daniel was a fool, and Vanessa was a liability. They deserve whatever federal prison does to them. But you and I are business people. Vanguard Technologies cannot survive a protracted corporate war against Apex Global. Drop the lawsuits, accept our buyout offer at fifty cents on the dollar, and walk away with billions. You can live comfortably anywhere in the world."
"And if I refuse?" I asked softly.
Viktor's expression hardened into ice. "Then Apex will systematically dismantle everything you love. Your stock will crash, your board will mutiny by noon tomorrow, and your legacy will be reduced to ash, exactly like your marriage."
I walked slowly toward him, stopping just inches away, looking straight into his cold gray eyes without flinching. "Viktor... you think Daniel and Vanessa were my only lines of defense?"
Before Viktor could answer, the floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows behind him suddenly flashed opaque, locking all exit shutters simultaneously. The security locks engaged with a heavy, synchronized click throughout the entire penthouse.
At the same time, the hidden wall panels slid open on both sides of the living room, revealing four armed federal marshals and Marcus Hale holding a fully encrypted digital recording tablet.

Viktor’s face froze for a fraction of a second—the first crack in his impenetrable armor. "What is this?"
"This," I whispered, holding up my phone which was actively broadcasting every single word of his confession directly to the federal financial crimes task force, "is checkmate, Viktor.
