Chapter 8 - The Secret Safe Deposit

Vanessa’s knees finally gave out, and she collapsed onto the plush Persian rug, her designer handbag spilling its contents across the floor. Lipstick, compact mirror, and a heavy, brass-keyed safety deposit box key rolled across the fabric.

I stood up slowly from my chair, walking around the table until I stood right above her. I looked down at her with cold, impassioned detachment.

"You were my maid of honor, Vanessa," I said quietly, my voice devoid of emotion. "You held my hand when I lost my daughter. You swore you loved me like a sister. And all the while, you were sleeping with my husband and plotting how to leave me penniless on a marble floor."

Vanessa looked up, tears finally streaming down her cheeks, washing away her mascara. Her sophisticated mask had completely shattered, revealing the desperate, terrified woman underneath. "Elena, please! It was Daniel! He manipulated me! He said you were growing cold, that you cared more about your company than your marriage! He promised he would divorce you legally, but things just... they got out of hand!"

"Oh, spare me the victim act," I snapped, my voice cutting through her sobs like a razor. "You struck me in the head with an award I won through sheer grit and sleepless nights. You stood there watching me bleed out while discussing offshore accounts."

I bent down, picking up the heavy brass key that had fallen from her bag. I held it up to the light, turning it over in my fingers. "Tell me, Vanessa, what is this key for? Is this the key to the safe deposit box at the Swiss-American Bank where you and Daniel stored the secondary asset transfers?"

Vanessa gasped, her eyes widening in sheer panic. "How do you... how did you know about that?"

"I own the bank, Vanessa," I replied coldly. "Or at least, enough shares of its holding company to know every time a private box is accessed under a fraudulent corporate alias. Marcus already has federal investigators securing branch 404 as we speak."

Before Vanessa could scramble to her feet to make a run for the elevator, the private doors slid open again. This time, two federal marshals in dark tactical vests stepped into the penthouse, flanked by Marcus Hale.

"Vanessa Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, wire fraud, and attempted murder," one of the marshals announced, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting in the chandelier light.

Vanessa shrieked, thrashing as they hauled her up from the floor and slapped the cuffs onto her delicate wrists. "Let me go! Elena, you can't do this! We're friends! We're best friends!"

"Best friends don't try to erase each other," I whispered as they dragged her past me toward the elevator.

As the doors closed behind her weeping form, I turned back to Marcus, who gave an approving nod. "That takes care of the accomplice. Now, what about Daniel?"

"Daniel is currently sitting in a holding cell at the precinct," Marcus replied, pulling a secure tablet from his pocket. "And he's about to find out that his brilliant legal defense team just abandoned him.
