Chapter 11 - Freezing the Empire

With Daniel in federal custody and Vanessa behind bars, the immediate threat to my physical safety was neutralized, but Vanguard Technologies was facing an unprecedented corporate crisis. News of the CEO's brutal assault and the co-founder's arrest for embezzlement broke across financial news networks like wildfire. Stock prices plummeted by twelve percent within the first hour of trading.
I sat at the head of the executive conference table once more, this time surrounded by a completely restructured crisis management team and financial auditors.
"We need to stem the bleeding before the European markets open," declared Sarah Jenkins, our chief financial officer, her fingers flying across her laptop. "Investors are panicking. Rumors are circulating that Vanguard's reserve accounts have been compromised by Meridian Holdings."
"They have been compromised," I said calmly, projecting a secure financial flow chart onto the massive boardroom screen. "Every single asset Daniel and Julian attempted to divert into Meridian Holdings has been intercepted and frozen by federal injunctions secured by Marcus this morning. None of our liquid reserves left our secure domestic accounts."
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the room.
"However," Marcus added, standing beside the projector with a remote control, "our vulnerabilities were exposed because of internal collusion. We need to purge every single mid-level executive and legal advisor appointed by Daniel during his tenure."
"Do it," I ordered without hesitation. "Audit every contract, every subsidiary, and every digital access key signed in the last twenty-four months. If anyone hesitates, show them the door."
As the team dispersed to execute the purge, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city. Vanguard Technologies was my creation, born from sleepless nights in a cramped college dorm room long before Daniel ever entered my life. He had thought he could use my success to fund his extravagant lifestyle and secret life with my best friend. He had underestimated the sheer resilience of a woman who had fought tooth and nail for every inch of her power.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. A restricted number.
I swiped and pressed it to my ear. "Elena Vance."
"Mrs. Vance," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the other end of the line—a voice I didn't recognize. "Enjoy your victory while it lasts. You caught the rats in your house, but you haven't looked outside your gates. Meridian Holdings wasn't Daniel's invention. Someone else is pulling the strings."

The line went dead with a sharp click.
I stared at the phone screen as a cold shiver ran down my spine. The nightmare wasn't over. Daniel and Vanessa were just pawns in a much larger, darker game.
