Chapter 10 - THE SENATOR

The “Senator” turned out not to be a sitting politician.
His name was Charles Vane.

Former state senator.

Attorney.

Fixer.

He had represented the Whitmore family for twenty-seven years.

Federal agents found Eleanor inside his Boston townhouse the following morning.

She was arrested without resistance.

News helicopters covered the street.

By noon, the story was national.

Missing heiress found alive.

Toddler rescued from lake.

Whitmore matriarch arrested.

Foundation fraud investigation.

Arthur hated every headline that referred to Evelyn as an heiress.

She was his daughter first.

Eleanor's attorney released a statement denying everything.

According to the statement, Evelyn had voluntarily entered psychiatric treatment.

Eleanor had acted only to protect her family.

The lake incident was described as “a tragic misunderstanding.”

Arthur read that sentence twice.

Then threw the newspaper away.

Lena warned them.

“Her defense will attack Evelyn's credibility.”

Thomas said, “Then they'll have to go through me.”

Evelyn looked at him.

It was the first time she seemed to believe he might actually mean it.
