Chapter 10 - Shadows of Trust

With the legal chaos surrounding the trust finally settling, Adrian decided it was time to address his relationship with Nora directly. He didn't want to communicate through attorneys or medical updates anymore. He wanted her to know exactly where he stood before the baby was born. Calling Margaret, he arranged a private visit to Nora's room, arriving with a single, simple bouquet of fresh yellow wildflowers—a stark contrast to the overwhelming, lavish arrangements sent by high-society acquaintances that filled the hallway outside.

Nora looked up from her book as Adrian walked in, a subtle sense of calm washing over her. Over the past month, she had come to appreciate his quiet, grounded presence. Unlike Julian, who had always commanded attention with grand gestures and practiced charm, Adrian possessed a soft-spoken humility and a steady, reliable strength. "Yellow wildflowers?" Nora asked, a genuine smile breaking across her face. "They're my favorite. How did you know?" "I didn't," Adrian admitted, rubbing the back of his neck with a slight grin. "I just thought they looked bright. Better than those stiff, expensive roses outside."

Adrian pulled a chair over and sat down, his expression turning serious as he reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a sleek blue folder and set it gently on the edge of her bed. "What's this?" Nora asked, her tone instinctively cautious. "This is a formal legal covenant prepared by my personal attorney," Adrian explained softly, meeting her eyes directly. "I want you to read it when you have time, but I'll tell you what's inside right now. It is a complete waiver of my legal claims to custody or parental rights over your child."

Nora stared at the folder, genuinely stunned. "Adrian... you're his biological father. You have every legal right to claim paternity now that the trust issue is resolved." "Biology was forced on us by a terrible crime, Nora," Adrian said, his voice deep and sincere. "You went through absolute hell because of people who tried to use your body and your baby for their own selfish greed. The last thing you need is another man stepping into your life, making demands and telling you how to raise your child. This document ensures that you have 100% full legal authority. I won't seek visitation, I won't interfere, and I won't make any claims unless you explicitly want me to be involved."

Nora picked up the folder, holding it against her lap. She looked into Adrian’s dark eyes, searching for any trace of hidden motive, manipulation, or hesitation. She found none—only genuine warmth, deep respect, and a profound desire to protect her. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Because when I looked out that window six weeks ago and saw you swinging in the rain, I didn't see an heir or a legal case," Adrian replied softly. "I saw a mother fighting with everything she had to protect her baby. You earned the right to make every choice for his future, Nora. No one else."
