Chapter 8 - Echoes in the Dark

The psychological trauma of the attack weighed heavily on Nora as the days turned into weeks. Though her physical wounds were beginning to heal—her shoulder relocated, her fingers bound in light splints—nightmares plagued her sleep. Every loud sound in the hospital, from the clinking of metal food trays to the sharp click of a door latch, triggered vivid flashbacks of Julian kneeling by the cable cutter with those hollow, dead eyes. Her obstetrician, Dr. Sarah Lin, recognized the signs of severe acute stress disorder and brought in an onboard perinatal psychologist, Dr. Marcus Vance, to help her process the immense trauma before the baby arrived.

"You're experiencing a completely normal reaction to an unimaginable betrayal, Nora," Dr. Vance explained during one of their quiet afternoon sessions in her hospital room. "The person who was supposed to protect you and your child became the primary threat to your survival. Rebuilding a sense of safety takes time." Nora looked out the window at the gray, rain-streaked sky, holding her baby close beneath her light sweater. "I don't care about the money or the prestige, Dr. Vance. I just want my baby to be safe. I look at him moving inside me, and I realize he was created as a weapon in someone else's war. How do I raise a child under the shadow of the Ashford name?"

Meanwhile, Adrian was dealing with his own trial by fire. As Thomas Ashford’s confirmed biological son, he was thrust into the center of a high-stakes corporate battle for control of Ashford Hotels. The company’s board of directors, panicked over collapsing stock prices and horrific public relations, called an emergency shareholder meeting. Margaret Sloan represented Adrian's interests, presenting the court-certified DNA evidence that legally established his position as the sole primary beneficiary of the Thomas Ashford Trust. The board had no choice but to strip Julian of all executive authorities and voting privileges, leaving Adrian as the majority controlling shareholder.

Despite his newfound status as a billionaire on paper, Adrian refused to move into the opulent Ashford estate or accept executive perks. He spent his days in a modest hotel room near Northwestern Memorial, regularly checking in on Nora's medical progress through Margaret, yet careful not to overstep his boundaries. He knew that despite being the baby's biological father, he was essentially a stranger to Nora. He didn't want his presence to feel like another form of pressure or intrusion during the most vulnerable time of her life. He was determined to prove that unlike Julian and Celeste, his intentions were entirely selfless.
