Chapter 4 - The Unbroken Thread

The room descended into a chaotic blur of flashing red emergency lights and shouted orders. Two officers forced Julian to his knees, while another grabbed Celeste by the arms, placing her under arrest despite her bitter, shrill protests about calling her attorneys. "I am an Ashford!" Celeste hissed, her aristocrat persona finally fracturing into raw rage as she was dragged toward the hallway. "You have no idea what you're doing to this city!" Julian stared up from the floor, his eyes meeting Nora's as the paramedics rushed into the office with a stretcher and medical gear. "Nora, please," Julian begged, his voice cracking. "Tell them it was an accident. Tell them the wind blew you over!" Nora looked down at the man she had loved and trusted for three years, feeling nothing but cold disgust. "I hope you rot in prison, Julian," she whispered.
The paramedics immediately knelt beside Nora, unfolding a portable fetal doppler monitor. "Ma'am, stay still," the lead paramedic said, applying conductive gel to her abdomen while the assistant began checking her pulse and blood pressure. Nora grabbed the edge of the stretcher, her knuckles turning white. "Is my baby okay? Please, tell me he's okay!" The room fell dead silent except for the crackle of the security radio in the corner. The paramedic moved the probe slowly across Nora's lower belly. For three agonizing seconds, there was nothing but hollow static. Nora buried her face in her hands, her heart stopping in horror. Then, suddenly, a fast, strong, rhythmic thumping filled the room—*thump-thump-thump-thump*.

The sound filled the office, clear and vibrant. Nora let out a sob of absolute relief, tears flooding her eyes as she clutched her belly. "He's alive... oh God, he's alive." The paramedic smiled gently. "Heartbeat is strong and steady, around 145 beats per minute. But we need to transport you to Northwestern Memorial immediately to check for internal injuries." As they lifted Nora onto the wheeled gurney, she looked across the room. Adrian was sitting on the edge of the couch while a medic popped his shoulder back into place with a sudden thrust. Adrian winced, but his eyes remained glued to Nora. As her gurney rolled past him, Nora reached out her hand. "Thank you," she choked out. "You saved us." Adrian gently touched her hand. "You're going to be okay," he said softly.
Down on the street, a massive crowd of news reporters and onlookers had gathered behind police barricades, flashing cameras capturing the shocking sight of Julian and Celeste Ashford being loaded into separate police cruisers. The Ashford brand, built over eighty years of ruthless Chicago high society dominance, was crumbling live on the evening news. Inside the ambulance, Nora closed her eyes as the siren began to wail, holding her swollen belly with both hands. She was safe for now, but as the adrenaline began to fade, a daunting realization settled over her: the storm was far from over. The secrets hidden within the Ashford family clinic were about to break wide open, and the truth about her baby’s origin would change her life forever.
