Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The news of the Ashford family scandal exploded across international headlines like a megaton bomb. The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, and national television networks ran non-stop coverage featuring the dramatic footage of Julian and Celeste in handcuffs, juxtaposed against photos of the cold penthouse rooftop. The story had every element the public lusted after: unimaginable wealth, high-society betrayal, medical fraud, and a mother's miraculous survival hanging from a skyscraper cable. Outside Northwestern Memorial, dozens of news vans parked along the curb, their satellite dishes pointed skyward, vying for any glimpse of Nora or the mysterious hero who had caught her.

Inside a quiet apartment in Lincoln Park, Adrian Cole sat on his couch, his arm immobilized in a heavy shoulder sling, watching the TV broadcast in silence. On the screen, a news anchor was breaking down the complex legal web of the Ashford Trust. "Sources confirm that Thomas Ashford’s true biological heir is not Julian Ashford, but thirty-two-year-old Adrian Cole, an architect from Ohio," the reporter announced. "If verified by the probate courts, Mr. Cole stands to inherit voting control of Ashford Hotels, a global corporation valued at nearly four billion dollars." Adrian picked up the remote and muted the television, rubbing his temples with his uninjured hand.

He had never wanted any of this. He had grown up in a modest two-bedroom house, raised by a hardworking mother and a stepfather who repaired engines for a living. He had come to Chicago simply to seek answers about a mysterious letter left behind after Thomas Ashford’s death, expecting perhaps an apology or a modest explanation. Instead, he had been thrust into a twisted web of corporate deception, nearly witnessed a murder, and discovered that he was the biological father of an unborn baby carried by a woman he had met for three seconds while dangling out of a skyscraper window. His phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text from Margaret Sloan: Nora wants to see you. She’s ready to talk.

Half an hour later, Adrian pulled on a dark jacket over his sling and slipped out the back entrance of his building to avoid the reporters camped out front. Taking a cab to the hospital, he walked up to the maternity floor under the watchful guard of two plainclothes police officers stationed outside Nora's door. Taking a deep breath, he knocked gently and stepped inside. Nora was sitting up in bed, looking smaller and fragile under the harsh hospital lighting, but her eyes were clear and focused as she looked up at him. "Hello, Adrian," she said softly. Adrian stopped near the foot of the bed, feeling unusually nervous. "Hi, Nora. How are you feeling?" "Like I survived a nightmare," she replied with a faint, tired smile. "Please, sit down."

Adrian pulled up a chair, maintaining a respectful distance. For a long moment, an uncomfortable silence hung in the room, filled only with the rhythmic hum of the heart monitor. "I read the clinic audit report today," Nora began, her voice steady despite the emotion shining in her eyes. "Margaret explained everything about the sample... and about Thomas Ashford." Adrian lowered his eyes, staring at his bandaged hand. "I swear to you, Nora, I had no idea. I didn't even know my sample still existed in that clinic. If I had known what Celeste and Julian were planning..." "I know," Nora interrupted gently. "You don't have to apologize. You didn't do this to me, Adrian. You saved my life. You saved his life." She rested her hand on her abdomen, looking up at him with deep sincerity. "Without you, neither of us would be breathing today."
