As summer arrived in Chicago, the bond between Nora and Adrian evolved naturally into something far deeper than shared trauma or coparenting. One evening, after putting Samuel to bed, Adrian invited Nora up to the roof garden of his home. Unlike the cold, terrifying limestone penthouse terrace of the Ashford Tower, this roof was cozy and welcoming, covered in soft green ivy, warm glowing string lights, and planters overflowing with fragrant summer flowers. A gentle breeze blew in off the lake, bringing the cool scent of summer air.

Nora walked up to the wooden railing, looking out at the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline. For the first time in nearly a year, looking out at the city from a high floor brought her no fear or anxiety—only a feeling of absolute peace. Adrian stepped up beside her, wrapping a soft cashmere shawl around her shoulders to shield her from the evening breeze. "Are you okay up here, Nora?" he asked softly, always mindful of her past trauma.
Nora turned to him, her eyes shining with warmth. She reached up, resting her hand gently against his cheek. "I'm more than okay, Adrian. When I look at this city now, I don't see the place where I almost lost everything. I see the place where you caught me. I see the place where our son was born." Adrian leaned into her touch, his heart beating fast as he looked deep into her eyes. "I loved you before I even knew your name, Nora," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with genuine emotion. "I loved you the moment I saw how fiercely you fought for your boy. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you both." Nora smiled through happy tears, stepping close and pressing her lips to his in a soft, passionate kiss under the warm starlight.
