Chapter 9 - The Legal Gambit

Six weeks after the rooftop incident, the legal battle shifted to the probate court, where Julian’s high-priced civil attorneys attempted a last-ditch effort to preserve his financial trust claims. They filed an injunction arguing that because Julian was raised by Thomas Ashford as his legal son and was listed on his official birth certificate, he retained perpetual rights to the family trust regardless of biological lineage. They further asserted that the genetic testing performed on Nora’s unborn baby was invalid because the sample had been obtained through medical fraud, thereby seeking to disqualify the baby from inheriting any portion of the Ashford estate.

The court hearing drew hundreds of press members, cramming into the grand marble hallway of the Daley Center. Margaret Sloan, acting on behalf of both Adrian and Nora’s legal interests, stood before Judge Patricia Holtz with an ironclad defense. "Your Honor," Margaret argued passionately, her voice echoing off the high ceilings, "the language of the Thomas Ashford Trust established in 1984 is unambiguous. Clause 12 clearly dictates that voting control of the enterprise shall pass exclusively through a 'biologically verified descendant.' Julian Ashford spent thirty years benefiting from a falsehood orchestrated by his mother. Furthermore, attempting to disinherit an unborn child whose biological father is the rightful heir—a child who survived a horrific attempt on his life by the very man claiming this trust—is not only legally baseless, but morally repugnant."

Judge Holtz reviewed the original trust documents alongside the certified genetic findings provided by the state forensics lab. She leaned forward, resting her arms on the bench, looking down sternly at Julian’s legal team. "The law does not reward deceit, counsel," Judge Holtz stated sharply. "The evidence demonstrating that Thomas Ashford was not Julian Ashford's biological father is absolute. Furthermore, the court finds that Adrian Cole is indeed the sole biological son of Thomas Ashford, making him the legitimate heir under the explicit terms of the trust. I am issuing a permanent injunction barring Julian Ashford from accessing any trust assets or asserting any claim over the corporate holdings."

The ruling was a crushing, final blow to Julian’s defense. Sitting at the defense table in his orange jumpsuit, Julian buried his face in his hands as the reality of his complete financial and social ruin washed over him. He was no longer an heir to an empire; he was a disgraced criminal waiting for a prison sentence that would likely span the rest of his natural life. Upstairs in her hospital room, watching the live courtroom feed on the wall-mounted television, Nora felt a massive weight lift from her chest. The legal battle over her baby’s identity was finally won, but the most important journey—bringing her child safely into the world—was just about to begin.
