Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Glass

Two days later, Nora lay in a private room on the high-risk maternity ward of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The physical injuries were extensive—a dislocated shoulder bound in a heavy brace, three fractured fingers on her right hand wrapped tightly, and deep, dark bruising covering her ribs. Yet physically, both she and the baby were stable. The real agony was psychological. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt the terrifying sensation of falling, the sound of rain, and the cold metal of the cable snapping beneath Julian’s shears. Her phone had been ringing non-stop with calls from news outlets, high-profile defense attorneys, and frantic clinic administrators, but she kept it turned off, staring silently out at the gray Chicago skyline.
A gentle knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Margaret Sloan stepped inside, carrying a dark leather briefcase and a warm cup of tea. "How are you holding up, Nora?" Margaret asked, setting the cup on the bedside table and pulling up a chair. "I haven't slept more than an hour at a time," Nora admitted, her voice raspy. "Every time I fall asleep, I feel like I'm dropping again." Margaret's face softened with genuine sympathy. "What Julian and Celeste did was evil. But I promise you, they won't get away with it. The State's Attorney has already charged them both with attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, and corporate fraud. Bail was outright denied."
Nora adjusted her position slightly, wincing as her bruised ribs protested. "Margaret... I need to know everything. No more lies, no more protected family secrets. Whose baby am I carrying?" Margaret unlocked her briefcase, pulling out a thick, official medical document sealed with a red wax stamp. "Three weeks before your incident, Elaine Park, the chief lab technician at North Shore Reproductive Medicine, stumbled upon an anomaly during a routine audit. She noticed that your IVF cycle record had been manually overridden in the database. The male donor sample used to fertilize your eggs didn't belong to Julian Ashford."

Nora’s breath hitched in her throat. "Then whose was it?" Margaret slid the document across the bed table toward Nora. "Seven years ago, a young man named Adrian Cole underwent radiation treatment for lymphoma in Chicago. Before starting treatment, he stored several reproductive samples at a private cryo-bank, which was later acquired by North Shore Reproductive Medicine. When Celeste Ashford discovered that Julian was biologically infertile due to a childhood condition—a fact Julian desperately hid to protect his trust inheritance—Celeste paid the clinic director two million dollars to quietly replace Julian's sample with Adrian's."
Nora stared at the paper, her mind spinning violently. "Adrian... the man who caught me at the window?" Margaret nodded slowly. "Yes. Celeste chose Adrian because she knew a secret that even Julian didn't know at the time. Adrian Cole is the biological son of Thomas Ashford—Julian's supposed father. Celeste wanted a child that carried genuine Ashford DNA to secure the four-billion-dollar voting trust, while keeping Julian in power. You weren't just a mother to them, Nora. You were an incubator for their empire." Nora pulled the document close to her chest, tears spilling over her lashes. The stranger who had risked his life to save her from the fourteenth floor wasn't just a brave bystander—he was the biological father of her child.
