Chapter 13 - The Awakening

Two weeks before her estimated due date, a sudden winter storm swept across Lake Michigan, blanketing Chicago in heavy snow and sub-zero winds. Nora was sitting by the fireplace in her Lincoln Park brownstone, reading a book on infant care, when a sharp, intense contraction shot through her lower back. She gasped, dropping her book onto the rug as her hands instinctively reached for her belly. She waited, timing the pain on her phone. Five minutes later, another violent surge struck, followed by her water breaking. The baby was coming early.

Panic flared briefly, but Nora forced herself to stay calm. She dialed her primary emergency contact—not an ambulance service or a lawyer, but Adrian. Adrian answered on the very first ring. "Nora? Is everything okay?" "Adrian... it's time," Nora gasped, leaning against the sofa armrest as another contraction washed over her. "My water just broke, and the contractions are four minutes apart." "I'm on my way! Don't move, I'm five minutes away!" Adrian declared firmly.

Despite the blinding snowstorm covering the streets, Adrian arrived at the brownstone in record time, pulling up in a sturdy four-wheel-drive SUV. He rushed up the stairs, carrying Nora's pre-packed hospital bag, and gently helped her down the front steps, shielding her from the icy wind with his heavy winter coat. He settled her into the heated passenger seat, ensuring her seatbelt was secure, before speeding carefully toward Northwestern Memorial Hospital through the snow-clogged streets.

Inside the hospital, the labor delivery suite was prepared immediately upon their arrival. Dr. Sarah Lin took charge of the delivery, monitoring the baby’s heart rate while the nursing staff helped Nora manage the intense, mounting pain. Adrian stayed right by her side the entire time, holding her hand, offering cold ice chips, and letting her squeeze his fingers with incredible force during every punishing wave of labor. Through the agonizing hours of the night, as the storm raged outside the reinforced hospital glass, Adrian never left her side, offering an unwavering pillar of quiet strength that kept Nora grounded.
