Chapter 1 - The Midnight Cry

The amber lamp in the corner of the nursery flickered violently, casting long, frantic shadows across the wallpaper. Outside, the autumn wind screamed against the glass, but inside, a far more terrifying sound tore through the quiet evening.

"Get away from her!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking with a hysterical edge that sounded barely human. Her fingers were tangled tightly in three-year-old Lily’s fiery red hair, yanking the toddler backward as the baby's sobs turned into raw, guttural wails.

The whole room fell silent.

Daniel stood between his niece Lily and his mother-in-law Margaret, the amber lamp flickering over a splintered dresser. Emily, his sister, hovered in teal pajamas, trembling as the nursery descended into chaos. The night erupted when Margaret lunged for a drawer, her fingers clawing at wood, and a metallic glint caught the light.

In the frantic scramble Daniel seized a cold brass key ring bearing "E. Whitaker," his late father's initials, the same as the missing pocket watch that had vanished after the funeral. Margaret's tear-streaked confession that she knew about the watch and the hidden ledger sent shockwaves through the cramped room.

"You think you can hide this from me?" Margaret croaked, her voice breaking as she pressed a crumpled photograph into Daniel's hand, revealing a sister his mother never mentioned.

"Who is Clara?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking. "My mother never mentioned a sister. She told us she was an only child!"

"Because Clara didn't exist to the world!" Margaret croaked, looking up with dark, sunken eyes. "Clara was the real mastermind behind Blackwood's finances. And she is coming to collect."

Before Daniel could digest the soul-crushing weight of her words, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway outside the nursery. The door burst open, slamming against the drywall.

Mark, his brother-in-law, appeared in the doorway with a bruised cheek and urgent eyes, the deeper mystery of his mother's secret ledger and the deadly debts it concealed emerged, threatening to rewrite everything Daniel thought he knew.

"Daniel..." Mark gasped, clutching his side as if he had just run five miles through the dark. "You need to hide. Right now. They found us. The ledger... it isn't just a record of debts. It's an execution list. And my name is at the top."

Daniel clutched the brass key ring tightly in his hand. The brass pressed into his palm like ice. He looked from his weeping sister holding little Lily to Mark's bloodied face, and then down at Margaret, who was shivering against the shattered mahogany dresser. The quiet, comfortable life Daniel had built was splintering into a thousand irrecoverable pieces. The storm had finally arrived, and there was no turning back.
