Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Doorstep

The piercing shrill of the alarm echoed through the study, shattering the tense standoff. Shadows danced wildly across the walls as the strobe lights flashed in rhythmic, disorienting pulses.

Vance stepped fully into the room, his suppressed firearm aimed squarely at Daniel's chest. "End of the line, kid. Give the lady her key."

Daniel looked at Clara, then at Vance, his mind racing through options at breakneck speed. "If I give you the key, you kill us anyway. You can't afford to leave witnesses who know Clara is alive."

Clara tilted her head slightly, approving of his sharp deduction. "You're smarter than your father, Daniel. But intelligence without power is just a tragedy waiting to happen."

"Mark! Now!" Daniel suddenly screamed.

Mark hurled a heavy glass globe from the corner desk straight at Vance's head. Vance flinched, instincts kicking in as he shifted his aim to shoot the flying glass. *Pfft! Pfft!* The silenced shots shattered the globe into a shower of glittering dust.

Taking advantage of the split-second distraction, Daniel lunged forward with the steel fireplace poker. He swung it with all his strength, striking Vance across the forearm. The suppressed pistol clattered across the hardwood floor, sliding right under the heavy mahogany desk.

"You little bastard!" Vance roared, swinging a massive fist that caught Daniel flush across the jaw.

Daniel stumbled back, tasting copper in his mouth, but he kept his footing. He ducked under Vance's second wild hook and slammed his shoulder into Vance's midsection, driving the larger man back into the glass bookshelf. Books and shattered glass rained down around them.

"Daniel, get out!" Mark yelled, grabbing a heavy brass floor lamp and shoving it between Vance's legs, tripping the enforcer to the floor.

Clara stood by the window, her calm demeanor cracking into a look of icy fury. "Useless fools!" she hissed, reaching into her coat for her own weapon.

"Not today, Aunt Clara!" Daniel ducked past Vance's groaning frame, grabbed Mark by the jacket, and shoved him out into the dark hallway. They sprinted down the corridor toward the rear stairs just as Vance's second gunman rounded the corner.

*Pfft! Pfft!* Bullets splintered the doorframe behind them.

"Basement! Move!" Daniel ordered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

They tore down the narrow back stairwell, their shoes slapping against the uncarpeted wood. Reaching the basement landing, Daniel slammed the heavy oak door shut and threw the heavy brass bolt into place.

Down in the subterranean gloom of the basement, the air was cold and damp, smelling of old concrete and stored coal. Emily was huddled behind a stack of wooden crates, holding Lily against her shoulder while trying to soothe the toddler's silent weeping.

"Daniel! Mark!" Emily whispered frantically, jumping up. "I heard gunshots! Is everyone okay?"

"We're alive," Daniel panted, wiping blood from his cut lip. "But Clara is here. She's working with Vance."

"Clara?!" Margaret gasped from the corner where she sat huddled on a dusty trunk. Her face turned ashen white. "She... she came back? I thought she was in a federal prison in Europe!"

"She escaped, or she bought her way out," Daniel said grimly. He pulled the brass key ring out of his pocket and looked at it closely under the dim pull-string lightbulb overhead. "This key opens something down here. Dad built this basement after the funeral renovations. Margaret, where is the safe?"

May you like

Margaret swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the cold stone wall behind the water heater. "Behind the old coal chute. But Daniel... you don't know what's in there. If you open that safe, there's no turning back."

"We're already past the point of no return," Daniel said fiercely. "Tell me how to open it!"
