Chapter 7 - A Sister's Silent Tears

The rain lashed down in heavy sheets as the family huddled inside an abandoned hunter's cabin deep in the Blackwood woods, two miles away from the estate. The cabin smelled of old pine and wet earth, but it offered temporary shelter from the storm and the hunters pursuing them.
In the corner, Emily sat on an overturned wooden crate, softly rocking Lily, who had finally fallen into an exhausted sleep. Emily's face was pale, tears mixing with rainwater on her cheeks.
"He lied to us, Daniel," Emily whispered, her voice cracking with profound heartbreak. She wasn't looking at Daniel—she was looking across the cabin at Mark, who sat slumped against the wall with his face buried in his hands. "Our whole life... our father's entire legacy... it was all built on blood money."
Daniel stood by the boarded-up window, peering through a crack between the wooden planks. "Dad was trapped, Emily. He made terrible choices, but everything he hid in that safe was designed to protect us once he was gone."
"Protect us?!" Emily snapped softly, trying not to wake her daughter. "We are being hunted like animals through the woods in the middle of the night! Mark owes millions to a criminal syndicate! Mother knew about it the whole time! How is any of this protection?!"
Margaret sat on a dusty bench, her arms folded tightly across her chest. She looked ten years older than she had three hours ago. "I didn't know the extent of it, Emily. Edward kept me in the dark for years. I only found out about Clara when I discovered the letters in his study after his funeral."
"Letters?" Daniel turned away from the window, his attention sharp. "What letters, Margaret?"
Margaret reached inside her soaked cardigan and pulled out a small plastic pouch containing three yellowed envelopes tied with blue ribbon. "Edward kept correspondence with Clara for twenty years. She wasn't just his business partner—she was his handler. When Clara went to prison in Europe, she left Edward in charge of her assets. But Edward started transferring the money into trust funds for you and Emily."
Daniel took the letters, his brow furrowing. "So Dad was stealing from Clara's syndicate to build a clean future for us?"
"Yes," Margaret said softly. "He wanted you two to have a normal life, far away from the crime and corruption that ruined his family. But Clara found out right before Edward died. That's why he hid the master ledger."
Mark raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and swollen. "Daniel... the ledger isn't just a financial record. It contains the private bank accounts of high-ranking government officials, judges, and law enforcement officers who took bribes from Clara's organization. That's why Clara wants it back so badly. It's not just money—it's total immunity."
Daniel looked down at the dark leather book in his hands. The weight of it felt like lead. This book held the power to destroy an empire, but it also held the power to destroy everyone he loved.
"Mark," Daniel said, stepping over to his brother-in-law. "Why did you go to Clara's people in the first place? Tell me the truth."
Mark swallowed hard, his jaw quivering. "I didn't go to them, Daniel. They came to me. Two years ago, my business went under. I was desperate for cash to pay for Lily's medical treatments when she was diagnosed with that rare pulmonary condition. A man named Sterling offered me a high-interest loan through an anonymous offshore firm. I didn't know it was Clara's money until it was too late."
Emily looked up, her expression softening slightly through her tears. "Mark... you did that for Lily?"
"I was trying to save our daughter, Emily!" Mark sobbed, covering his face. "I made a deal with the devil, and now the devil is here to collect!"
Daniel set his hand firmly on Mark's shoulder. "We're going to fix this, Mark. But we need to hit back. Clara thinks we're running, but she doesn't know what I'm willing to do to keep this family safe."

"What are you going to do, Daniel?" Emily asked nervously.
"I'm going to call District Attorney Sterling," Daniel said, a cold smile touching his lips. "The man who gave Mark the loan... and the man whose name is on page ten of Dad's bribery list."
