Chapter 3 - The Torn Photograph

The silence in the grand hallway was thick enough to choke on. Upstairs, Daniel motioned for Mark to stay low near the banister while he maneuvered around the shadows toward the study. If his father had left a hidden ledger, the study was the only place that made sense.

"Vance!" Daniel's voice echoed through the high ceilings of the house, bouncing off the mahogany walls. "You're looking for me!"

Down below, Vance immediately raised his head, his torch light snapping up toward the second-floor gallery. "Daniel Whitaker. The noble son. I was hoping you'd be reasonable. Your father wasn't. Look where it got him."

"My father was a better man than you'll ever be!" Daniel shouted back, intentionally drawing Vance's two henchmen toward the grand staircase. "You want the key to the vault? Come and get it!"

Daniel turned on his heel and darted down the narrow corridor toward the library study. Behind him, heavy boot heels pounded up the wooden stairs in rapid pursuit.

Inside the study, the smell of old paper and leather lingered in the air. Daniel rushed to the massive mahogany desk, pulling open the brass drawers one by one. Nothing except old bills, legal pads, and tax returns. He pulled the crumpled photograph out of his pocket and held it up to the desk lamp.

The image of his mother and her secret sister, Clara, stared back at him. Why had his mother erased her own twin sister from their lives? What had Clara done to earn a scar across her face and a reputation as a criminal mastermind?

"Looking for answers, nephew?" a sharp, cool voice purred from the dark corner of the study.

Daniel spun around, brandishing the heavy steel poker.

A woman stepped out from behind the heavy velvet drapes. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, her silvering hair pinned up in an elegant bun. Across her left cheek was the exact same jagged scar from the twenty-five-year-old photograph. Her eyes were hazel—identical to Daniel's late mother's eyes—but cold as glacier ice.

"Clara," Daniel breathed, his pulse pounding in his ears. "You're alive."

"Alive and ready to collect what is rightfully mine," Clara said softly, pulling a pair of thin leather gloves onto her hands. "Your father was a foolish fool, Daniel. He thought he could steal thirty million dollars from my syndicate and use it to buy your family a quiet, suburban life."

"My father didn't steal anything!" Daniel retorted, holding his ground. "He was protecting us from you!"

"Is that what he told you?" Clara chuckled, a terrifying, musical sound. "Edward was my business partner long before he married my pathetic sister, Evelyn. He managed the accounts. He built the shell companies. But when the Federal Bureau started closing in, Edward panicked. He tried to double-cross me, hid the ledger, and left me to take the fall."

"You killed him," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a cold rage.

"I didn't have to," Clara smiled thinly. "His own guilt did the work for me. But he left the job unfinished. He hid the key to the ledger in that little watch of his. And now, my dear Daniel, you are going to hand it over."

Outside the study door, heavy footsteps rushed closer. Mark burst into the room, gasping for air, his face pale as chalk. "Daniel! Vance is right behind me! We have to go!"

Clara glanced toward the door, her expression shifting into mild annoyance. "Vance is so painfully blunt. He lacks finesse. But he gets results."

Before Daniel could react, Clara reached into her jacket and pulled out a small silver device. She pressed a button, and sudden deafening alarm blared through the entire estate, blinding strobes flashing from the security sensors she had compromised.

"The game is up, Daniel," Clara said as Vance stepped into the doorway, gun raised. "Hand over the brass key, or watch your entire world burn tonight."
