Chapter 2 - Cold Brass Secrets

The sound of tires crunching against gravel echoed outside the estate, sending a shockwave of adrenaline through Daniel's veins. He turned instantly toward the nursery window, pulling the heavy velvet curtain back just an inch. Below, dark headlights cut through the heavy autumn mist like twin blades.

"How many of them are there, Mark?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

Mark slumped against the doorframe, his breath rattling in his chest. "Three... maybe four. They intercepted me near the bridge. They knew I was heading here. Daniel, they aren't collection agents. They're Blackwood's clean-up crew."

Emily squeezed her daughter tighter, backing into the corner between the crib and the bookshelf. "Daniel, what do we do? Oh God, please don't let them take Lily!"

"Nobody is taking anyone," Daniel said firmly, turning back to face his frantic family. He looked down at the brass key ring in his hand. The letters *E. Whitaker* gleamed under the amber light. "Margaret, stand up. Right now."

Margaret wiped her bloodshot eyes with the sleeve of her cardigan, her knees trembling as she pushed herself up against the dresser. "Daniel, you don't know what they're capable of. Your father thought he could outsmart them, but he ended up dead in that hospital bed. Do you really think his death was an accident?"

The room seemed to drop another ten degrees. Daniel felt his heart drop into his stomach. "What are you saying?"

"The heart attack was induced," Margaret whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind howling outside. "Edward hid the master key to the offshore vault in his pocket watch. When he refused to give up the ledger, they killed him. But they didn't find the watch. I took it."

"You took it?" Emily gasped, horrified. "At Dad's funeral? You let us believe a grave robber or a shady relative stole it!"

"I took it to protect us!" Margaret shouted, defensive anger flaring through her tears. "I knew if Blackwood found the watch, they'd kill all of us to eliminate the witnesses! I hid the brass key in the nursery dresser because I thought no one would ever look here!"

"Well, you were wrong!" Daniel snapped, grabbing Mark's shoulder and pulling him toward the back hallway. "We need to move. Emily, take Lily through the servant's stairwell down to the basement pantry. Lock the iron door from the inside and don't open it for anyone unless you hear my voice."

"What about you?" Emily cried, tears spilling down her pale cheeks.

"Mark and I are going to draw them away," Daniel said, his eyes hard as flint. "If they want the ledger, they'll have to come through me."

A heavy thump resonated from the floor below—the sound of the front oak door being kicked off its heavy hinges. Voices echoed in the lower foyer, cold, calm, and methodical.

"Edward Whitaker!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted from below. "We know the family is in the house. Make this easy on yourselves and hand over Clara's book!"

Mark looked at Daniel with pure terror in his eyes. "That's Vance. He's Clara's chief enforcer. He doesn't leave survivors, Daniel."

"He hasn't met me yet," Daniel growled. He slipped the brass key ring into his front pocket and grabbed a heavy steel fireplace poker from the stand near the hearth. "Mark, grab the flashlight. We're going to use the house layout against them."

As Emily scurried down the dark secondary hallway with Lily wrapped safely in her blanket, Margaret shrank into the shadow of the linen closet. Daniel and Mark moved stealthily toward the grand staircase landing, peering into the cavernous dark foyer below.

Two tall men in dark trench coats stepped through the shattered front entrance, flashlight beams sweeping across the family portraits hanging along the wall. In the center stood a broad-shouldered man with a scarred neck, holding a suppressed pistol at his side. Vance.

"Search the ground floor first," Vance commanded his men in a flat, ruthless tone. "If you find the girl or the daughter, bring them to me. The mother will talk once we start breaking fingers."

Daniel's grip tightened around the steel poker until his knuckles turned white. The secrets of his father's past were no longer abstract ghosts—they were standing in his living room with loaded weapons. And to save his family, Daniel was going to have to uncover every single lies his parents had ever buried.
