Chapter 15 - Midnight Heist

Three weeks later, Daniel received a unexpected phone call from Agent Marcus at the FBI field office. The investigation into Clara's remaining offshore accounts was wrapping up, but one final detail required Daniel's presence.

Daniel drove to the federal building in downtown Blackwood, where Agent Marcus met him in a secure evidence vault. On a steel table sat the brass key ring, the silver pocket watch, and a sealed evidence bag containing Clara's personal belongings.

"We finished decrypting the flash drive you provided, Mr. Whitaker," Agent Marcus said, holding up a printout report. "Your father's records allowed us to recover over twenty-two million dollars in stolen assets. Under federal asset forfeiture laws, a portion of recovered funds will be placed into a state victim relief fund, and the legitimate portion of your father's estate has been fully cleared for transfer to you and Emily."

"Thank you, Agent Marcus," Daniel said. "What about Clara?"

"Her trial was expedited," Marcus revealed. "She pleaded guilty to federal racketeering charges this morning to avoid a lengthy trial. She will serve life without parole at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury."

"And Margaret?" Daniel asked softly.

"Margaret entered a plea agreement for second-degree manslaughter and conspiracy," Agent Marcus replied. "She was sentenced to fifteen years. She asked if she could see you, Daniel. She wants to apologize before she is transferred to the state prison facility."

Daniel stood silent for a moment, looking at his father's silver pocket watch on the steel table. He picked up the watch, feeling its cold familiar weight.

"Tell her I forgive her," Daniel said calmly. "But I won't be visiting. Our family needs to move forward, and looking back will only keep the wounds open."

Agent Marcus nodded respectfully. "I understand, son. You did a good thing here, Daniel. You brought down an empire that plagued this state for thirty years."

Daniel picked up the brass key ring and the silver pocket watch, slipping them into his coat pocket. They were no longer symbols of fear or secret debts—they were reminders of a battle fought and won for the people he loved.
