Chapter 10 - Confrontation at Dawn

"You called the feds?!" Vance yelled, spinning around toward the entrance with his weapon raised.
"I didn't call them," Daniel said calmly. "My sister did. Half an hour ago, she uploaded the contents of Dad's encrypted flash drive to the FBI's public corruption tip line from a secure terminal at the city library."
Clara's face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. Her pristine, calm composure shattered completely. "You fool! You ruined everything! If that data goes public, every asset we have gets frozen!"
"That was the point," Daniel said.
"Kill him!" Clara screamed at Vance. "Kill him and get the book!"
Vance raised his gun toward Daniel's chest, but Daniel moved first. He lunged forward, throwing his weight straight into Vance's waist, driving the massive enforcer backward into a stack of wooden pallets. The gun discharged wildly into the air—*BANG!*—the bullet striking an iron beam overhead and sending sparks raining down.
Tires screeched outside as heavy tactical vehicles breached the mill gates. "FBI! Hands in the air! Drop your weapons!" amplified voices boomed from outside.
"Sterling, get the ledger!" Clara shrieked, darting toward the rear emergency exit behind the milling equipment.
Sterling, driven by blind panic, dove for the ledger that had fallen onto the dusty floor during the scuffle. Daniel kicked Sterling hard in the ribs, knocking the corrupt attorney sideways onto the concrete.
Vance pushed himself up from the splintered pallets, blood streaming from his nose, and pulled a tactical knife from his belt. "I'm going to carve you up, kid!"
Daniel grabbed a heavy iron pipe lying on the floor and swung it upward with all his strength. The pipe struck Vance's wrist with a sickening crack, dropping the knife. Daniel followed up with a sharp heel kick to Vance's chest, knocking the heavy enforcer out cold against the iron pillar.
"Clara!" Daniel yelled, turning toward the back exit.
He sprinted through the dark machinery corridors, following the sound of clicking high heels against the metal grate floor. Clara was running toward the rear loading dock, holding a small leather briefcase close to her chest.
"Stop, Aunt Clara!" Daniel shouted, catching up to her at the edge of the elevated loading platform.
Clara spun around, her breathing ragged, her scar flushed red against her pale skin. She pulled a small snub-nosed revolver from her coat, pointing it straight at Daniel's head. "Stay back, Daniel! I swear to God I'll shoot you!"
"It's over, Clara," Daniel said, stopping five feet away, raising his hands slowly. "The FBI has surrounded the building. The flash drive is already in the hands of the state prosecutor. There is nowhere left to run."
"I spent thirty years building this empire!" Clara cried, her voice trembling with a mixture of fury and despair. "Your father was weak! He wanted to give it all away to you and Emily! I earned this money!"
"You earned it by ruining lives! By threatening children!" Daniel stepped forward slowly. "Look at yourself, Clara. You're standing in a broken mill, surrounded by police, pointing a gun at your own nephew. Is this what your life was worth?"
Clara's hand shook on the revolver, her eyes darting frantically between Daniel and the flashing red lights surrounding the perimeter outside. For a single second, a flash of human grief crossed her face—the ghost of the young woman in the twenty-five-year-old photograph.

"You look so much like your mother..." Clara whispered softly, her eyes filling with bitter tears.
"Then do what my mother would have wanted," Daniel said gently. "Put the gun down."
