Chapter 8 - The Hidden Safe

The storm began to abate as dawn approached, casting a cold, gray light over the misty forest. Inside the cabin, Daniel used a small burn-phone he had retrieved from Mark's vehicle to dial a private number written in his father's ledger under the name *DA Sterling*.

The phone rang four times before a smooth, cultured male voice answered.

"Sterling here."

"District Attorney Sterling," Daniel said calmly, standing near the cabin doorway. "My name is Daniel Whitaker. Son of Edward Whitaker."

A sharp, heavy pause hung on the line for several seconds. When Sterling spoke again, his smooth tone was gone, replaced by a tense, cautious whisper. "Daniel. You shouldn't be calling this number."

"I have my father's ledger, Sterling," Daniel said plainly, skipping all pleasantries. "I'm looking at page ten right now. It has your offshore account numbers in the Cayman Islands, along with three signed wire confirmations totaling one point eight million dollars."

Sterling gasped audibly over the phone. "Listen to me very carefully, son. You are way over your head. Clara Blackwood is a monster. If she finds out you have that book, she will burn your entire family to ashes."

"She's already trying," Daniel replied coldly. "Her man Vance stormed my house last night. He tried to kill my sister and her child. But here's the deal, Sterling: you're going to help me stop her, or this entire ledger goes directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the press by noon today."

"You can't do that!" Sterling panicked. "If you leak that book, half the state government falls! I'll be ruined! You'll be ruined!"

"I have nothing left to lose," Daniel spat. "Clara wants thirty million dollars and the ledger. I know where the actual money is hidden. Dad didn't leave it in a bank—he hid it in the vault under the old Blackwood flour mill."

"The flour mill was condemned ten years ago!" Sterling whispered.

"That's why it was the perfect hiding place," Daniel said. "I need you to arrange a police escort to meet me at the mill at nine o'clock sharp. Tell Clara I'm meeting her there alone to hand over the ledger in exchange for a full release of Mark's debt and a safety guarantee for my family."

"You're walking straight into a trap, Daniel!" Sterling warned. "Clara will never let you leave that mill alive!"

"She thinks she's setting a trap for me," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with absolute determination. "But she doesn't know I have the master key. Set up the meeting, Sterling. Or your career ends in a federal prison cell."

Daniel ended the call and pulled out the small velvet-lined wooden box he had salvaged from the basement safe. He unlatched the brass hook and opened the lid.

Inside lay his father's missing silver pocket watch.

Daniel picked up the heavy watch, feeling its smooth, cold silver surface. On the front was an intricate carving of a phoenix rising from flames. He pressed the top stem, and the front casing popped open.

Inside, where the delicate clockwork gears should have been ticking, was a tiny, high-density encrypted flash drive and a small metallic key with an electronic microchip embedded in its head.

"Dad didn't just leave a paper ledger," Daniel murmured, showing the drive to Mark and Emily. "He digitalized the entire criminal infrastructure. Every video, every audio recording, every shell company contract is on this drive."

"Daniel..." Emily said, her voice shaking with worry. "You're planning to meet Clara alone, aren't you?"

"I have to," Daniel said softly, looking at his sister and his sleeping niece. "As long as Clara is free, you will never be safe. Dad spent his life running from his past. I'm not going to run anymore."
