Chapter 12 - A Dinner Invitation

Three weeks after the trial concluded, the snow began to melt, yielding to the early green shoots of an impending Vermont spring. Blackthorn House had been legally restored to Claire, its dark corridors cleansed of Vivian’s toxic legacy through a thorough renovation that brought warmth and light back into the ancestral halls.

That evening, Claire and I sat at the mahogany dining table where her father used to preside. Silver candlesticks cast a warm, flickering glow across roasted lamb and fine French wine. Claire raised her crystal glass, her eyes sparkling with affection and lingering wonder.

"To new beginnings," she said softly. "And to the man who kept his secrets safe while protecting mine."

I touched my glass to hers, the crystal ringing like a tiny bell in the quiet room. "To truth, Claire. And to the end of winters that never should have been."

I locked the screen, slipping the device back into my pocket without a second glance. The underworld could wait. For now, the only kingdom that mattered was right here, sitting across the candlelit table, smiling at me with eyes full of love and unshakeable peace.
